Hello everyone. Being new to the electric guitar scene and this site, was wondering about the Hot Rod Deluxe which I picked up a few days ago. The sound on the clean is excellent . Switching to "drive" I get some background buzzing which is tolerable, but on "more drive" the background (noise, hum) is quite annoying unless I turn the Master and Drive down to a minimum. Is this normal for this amp? Would different tubes solve this? Any input would be appreciated. Sorry if this was posted before, but could not find anything on the search. :D

Hi, and congrats on the amp purchase! I have owned my Hot Rod deluxe pretty much since the day that they introduced the Hot Rod line and still love the amp.

Regarding your hum, there are several variables that could contribute to that issue. The first thing to consider is what kind of pickups are in your guitar. If you are using single coils, some hum is to be expected especially when you use a considerable amount of gain. If the hum goes away when you turn the guitar's volume down or face a different direction in the room, this is likely what you are experiencing. This is the most common source. Other sources for hum could include a PC monitor if you are sitting in front of it while playing, florescent lighting, or even AC power/ground or guitar electronics issues. I would start by looking at if your guitar's pickups are influencing the issue by their nature.

Good luck,

Larry

Thanks Larry for the reply. I have tried all the suggestions you mentioned before I posted here for help. My guitar is an American Strat single coil and do not get any buzzing until I am sitting on top of the amp which is minor in noise or feedback. Turning the guitars volume or position does not make much difference. There are no electronics on the line that the amp is on and went as far as trying a power conditioner (monstercable) which made no difference. As mentioned before the clean is fine, just the "drive" mode starts getting noisy and worse in "more drive". Adjusting the settings like Master, Drive, all three tones, etc. in a million different variables help but nothing to write home about. I don't think it is the guitar because it played clean on my buddies SCXD. Short of taking out a hammer and chisel, tomorrow I will move and try the equipment in different parts of the house but kind of doubt if I will get any improvement since its the Drive channels that are noisy. I'll post the results.

Thanks

Joe

Sounds like a microphonic preamp tube. Tap on all the tubes with a pencil when the drive and more drive engaged. If you have a microphonic tube it will be a loud type noise through the amp with tapped.

Hi guys! Finally resolved the problem with all the noise on the drive channels. In a nutshell I got a lemon. Returned it for an exchange but the new one was worse than the first. Got refunded and went to another merchant where the 1 out of the 3 they had in stock had the same problem. Needles to say, purchased one of the good ones and am enjoying it. I am questioning the quality of the Mexican made amps, where even simple things like wood screws are not even screwed in strait?

Glad to see you got it resolved. The amps really do rip when in good working order.

 Back again with my hotrod problems. Thought I got a good one but a week later started getting loud popping and vibration type noises. Took the back cover off and found the the V3 tube was just dangling, not set in any housing just suspended in air. The aluminum heat tape on the right side was curled and touching part of the circuit board. Looking around further the reverb tank bag was ripped (actually a nice clean cut almost the length of the bag) plus huge open holes where the screw downs are. Again I am questioning the quality of MIM stuff?? Obviously no quality control! Has anyone else had such grief with hotrod or other MIM junk.
I took mine back and upgraded to a DRRI. Big difference in quality and the sound. Should have spent the extra $250 to start with. :D

Good for you man. Glad to see you got it resolved. For sure you shouldn't have to fix a new amp at all.

There you go!! Thats what I'm talking about. My DRRI is a killer amp no doubt and there really isn't a lot going on in there to go wrong. You made the right decision.
