There are two different choices for a 6 ckt 4" ribbon cable on darrenriley. I'm not sure of the pitch between the wires so I don'y know which one to get. The big indicator of which one I need is that one is out of stock as it is no longer made by Fender. This is most likely the one I need. Does anyone here know what the pitch is between conductors? I figure if I know that I can get one from DigiKey. Oh and the wire guage as well. It seems like it should be a 24 or 22 guage but the only thing that seems to be available on DigiKey is the small 26 guage. Any clues for a source would appreciated, thank you! I'll post the horror show pictures at some point of the "bias pot mod" I had to undo in this amp. A small hint of what I had to deal with, the pot was mounted by forming a pool of solder in the bottom of the chassis and the edge of the pot case was just immersed into it.

He didn't want to pull the board out so he just clipped leads and tack soldered:

At least he didn't want anyone to get shocked:

This is why I'm looking for the ribbon cable.

Hi icefloe01,

Wow!

Looks like after a drunken frat party inside that amp. You certainly have your work cut out for you.

I don't think that there is any good reason that you have to use ribbon cable, as individual wires will work fine. But if you want the ribbon cables, check the link below, scroll all the way to the bottom of the site. There are two different part numbers, both are 6 wire ribbon cables, but I can't remember what the difference is between the two.

Fender part # 0038856000 or Fender part # 0050687000

You might contact them to see which one will work. Contact info at top of their site.
http://www.darrenriley.com/FenderAmpParts.htm

Maybe also contact Fender to get the part number for the ribbon cable (calling is much faster than email). If you have the part number, it helps finding sources for the cable.

Happy repairing, and please show some "after" pics (and correct part numbers if you get them), when you are done. :)

BTW, what do you mean by the "pitch" of the wire? Never heard that before.

I think I did a pretty good job of cleaning everything up, now I just need the ribbon cable. Once I get that taken care of I'll do the after pics. I'd prefer to do the ribbon cable to try and keep everything as stock looking as possible.

Pitch refers to the spacing between wires and is referenced from the center of one wire to the center of the next adjacent wire. A standard IC has a pitch of .1" between pins on a side and a pitch of .3" from one side to the other (once inserted in a board or socket, I prefer sockets). I think the ribbon cable I need is the one that Fender no longer makes. :( The only thing DigiKey has in stock that is 6 wires and 4" long is 26 gauge and that seems a little flimsy to me but, if that's all I can get that's what I'll have to use. I know 26 guage is fine for the signal level I just wanted something a little larger so it would hold up better physically. From just eyeballling the other two ribbons in there they seem larger than 26 Ga but I could very well be wrong.

Thanks for the info. You don't want the wires too close with high voltage. I think that you are right, maybe it's 22 to get that high of a voltage rating. Looks like nothing available at Mouser with a 600 V rating in the gray with black edge, only available in multi-color. I would contact Fender to be sure of specifics, they have always been very helpful to me. It's quite possible that Fender might send you some ribbon cables if they have any.

The size of the wire is more for current handling capability than voltage. Since this is just the initial preamp circuit current isn't too much of an issue. Plus a larger gauge wire also helps with the ability to handle a little bit more of the physical stresses if the boards ever need to be removed for service again. As that particular ribbon cable just handles the signals for the first 12AX7, the highest voltage before going through either R4 or R9 is 364VDC (according to the schematic, I haven't actually measured it myself). DigiKey has a 6 wire 26Ga in stock for $1.02 and Mouser has an 8 wire 24Ga instock for $0.27. I'd pay more for the shipping. Both are only rated for 300V but that should be okay as the working voltage of insulation is well below its actual breakdown voltage. I'll call Fender when I get off work to see if I can get some absolute answers.

Just got off the phone with Fender. I was almost in luck but then not. They actually have a few of the original cables in I think he said Impenada. The problem is that it's not set up in the system in any way that they can get one sent to me. He found some specs on it for me though, 300 volt rated (good), 24Ga stranded (not good), and the pitch is .1". I can't find anyone that has a 24Ga ribbon cable in stock. They're all non-stocked special order that involves ridiculous (for me) minimums. Oh well, I'll keep diggin' away hopin' to stumble across a lucky find...

Thanks icefloe01, I thought that it was 22 and 600V, but 24 I can believe.

Fender was probably referring to "Ensenada" which is the plant in Mexico. Please let us know if you come across a supplier.

Mouser has an 8 conductor 8" for 27 cents + $6.95 shipping through USPS w/ delivery confirmation as the cheapest option. So I can just strip off two wires and cut it in half. Still, $7.22 total for .27 part. :x

Back in working order! One sacrilege has been performed here though; the 6l6's that were in it originally were dead and the only tubes I had to put back in it until my friend can buy some new ones were some old Peavey's. They still work and even sound good even though they're over 22 years old. :!:

Great job, looks much better. Now if you could only get Sarah McLachlan to do a sad commercial about the abused amps....

Thanks for sharing the pics and info, enjoy! :D
