Hello Everyone, I have a 2 yr old deluxe reverb reissue amp. The amp has not been used much because i been using my vibro champ xd most times. I doubt if the drri even has total of 10 hours on it. Anyways, i had it out and playing on it tonite and sorta noticed that i had it up to 3 just to get the room filling volume. in the back of my mind i sorta thought that it used to be that loud on just 1 on volume but the thought passed since, the amp was sounding like it should tone wise. I went to shut it down for the night and put her on standby and, for hell of it i tilted amp forward a little and looked at the lit power tubes when, i noticed that one of the 6v6's was not lit. i touched the tube and it was cold while the others were still lit and pretty hot. i pulled the tube and put it back in socket..no luck..so i pulled the tube again and ran it on my tube tester...it shows open filament...bummer.. i been looking at the pairs at g.c. because there is one near me. i was wondereing about the tung sol pairs they sell and what do they mean by hard meduim and soft pairs? Thanks ....

Dave, I'm not sure about Tungsol's rating system. But usually that would refer to when the tube goes into break-up or distortion. So the soft would indicate an earlier break-up on the signal applied scale. Maybe the other folks have a more accurate experience. Art

Search the threads here before investing in Tung-Sol Reissues, several of us had issues with them in a very short time after being installed in our DRRI's

I went back to hunting down Vintage RCA's and Sylvanias and have had zero issues !

I was head over heels about the T/S RI's at first then two went bad and I saw a couple of guys posting here about the same issues, Too bad they sound great when they work.

While i had the amp on the bench, i figgured i would test the other 6v6 and the 5ar4 rectifier....the working 6v6 came up as pretty much brand new still (140 percent) but, when i checked the 5ar4, i show one side is dead while other side comes up like new almost. both fillaments on the 5ar4 light up....is it time to start panicking? And, thanks for the info on the tung-sols i was just considereing buying the original E.H. tubes since, i do not have the bias thingy to set bias anyway.

If one side of that 5AR4 is dead, you should have a drastic reduction in power. Or no power. But this should have an equal bad effect on both 6V6GT's. Not cause only one to not light.

Sounds like you have a dead 6V6GT, plus a bad rectifier. I have stopped using TungSol RI 6V6GT. This tube sounds great, but really can't handle the plate voltages and idle bias current demanded of Fender 6V6GT push-pull amps. I've had 4 selected sets go bad on me. Sometimes one tube of the set. Sometimes both tubes.

I have modded the circuit to a more conservative grid-to-ground resistor (120k-ohm versus 220k-ohms) and coupling cap. I have run slightly lower idle bias. Yet, still had tubes go ballistic.

Of all the current production. Only the TAD STR-6V6GT seems ok. No long-term tests, yet. If I were you... look for strong testing, used RCA, Sylvania, GE 6V6GTA. These are tough tubes.

And I've had very good luck with this rectifier in the link. From my experience. One good Sylvania-type 5AR4 (which is the basis of the Philips-ECG tube) will last nearly a lifetime. Be sure to re-bias the amp, after getting a new rectifier, as well as output tubes.

Listen to BMW2002Ti He has helped me with tubes a few times !

i have a set of RCA 6V6GT's I found at a flea market for $3.00 each and they test 110% good and sound amazing !

My quest this summer is to stock pile as many 6V6, 6L6 and GZ34's as i can possible find.

The tone is worth the effort !

I've never had any luck at all with GT. Total hype IMO.

Whoa! That's a new one on me, Dave. So one of the plates failed on the 5AR4, but the amp kept on cookin' ? And it basically ran single ended on one power tube? I've heard of push-pull amps running on one power tube, but never half a rectifier. That's very interesting! BTW what kind of tube tester are you using? Gave up an old tester because the plate volts were only suitable for 350volts, and I was spending too much time playing around with the old tubes( having way too much fun). But Yeah, they're great tools. Art

I'd try Mike Kropotkin at KCANOStubes.com. I've bought from him for over 10 years and have been very happy with his selection, price and recommendations.

I really like the sound of the Mazda NOS 6V6's in my Princetons.

French made Mazda, Adzam, Radio Technique, & Visseaux are GREAT tubes. I have metal based Visseaux grey glass 6V6GT's in one of my Princeton Reverbs. Tone to die for. Another good foreign-made tube is the Brimar brown based CV511/6V6GTY.

I have been playing my vibro champ xd and, my 1980 harvard reverb amps mostly ( i mostly like playing clean with my strat) And, like i said before, the deluxe reverb has not been used really all that much But still, i'm happy to have one. Ihave wanted one since my pre-teen years up. The other day, i figgured i would fire it up and run it for awhile. I was running my epi 335 into the vibrato channel with touch of reverb. i had the volume around 2 and was playing when, the volume came up all of a sudden. And, the amp worked all that time. (i figgured i might have dirty tube socket no biggie) Then, the other night plugged my strat into the vib channel (i loves my reverb lol) and had to turn it up to 3 just to fill the room nicely. but thought to myself that either my pups are weak or mabye it was me but, i seem to remember when i 1st got the amp, number 1-2 on vloume used to get pretty loud in here so, i cranked it up to 5 and it got louder but not ear splitting like i used to and no breakup. so i figgured mabye better shut it down and re-seat the tubes see if thats the problem. i looked in the back before shutting down and thats when i noticed the 1 output tube was dead and cold and, so it went from there on my earlier posts. As for tube testers, i use an eico model 667 dynamic transconductance tester and a superior cathode emission type tester for quick small signal go-no go testing. the heater filament is open on the 1 6v6 the other 6v6 comes up as new on the 667 and, the 5ar4 comes up dead on 1 diode section and, very good on the other section (tried on both testers same deal. but the heater is good on the bad section on rectifier tube.

Also, Thanks for the help and, the links too...I know that the rca tubes are a very popular choice and, thats what i am going to go for instead of messing with the modern built tubes if possible. For kicks, I had an rca 12ax7 new in the box here and, replaced the groove tube 12ax7 in my vibro champ xd with it just to see if any imporvement. It made quite a diffrence in the sound of the amp believe it or not....much better sounding. Going to leave it in there lol. Have a good day everybody and, thanks again.
