Hey all, I would really like to have a Fender or Vox tube amp for my American Standard Strat. I am fed up of solid-state amps (I own a Roland Cube 30 and Cube 60) and am looking for an affordable tube amp since I am in a tight budget due to college. I am willing to spend at most $1000 Canadian (if I’m not feeling cheap), and I mostly play blues, soft rock (Red Hot Chili Peppers), LOTS of metal (Metallica, Dream Theatre), and Yngwie Malmsteen & Steve Vai stuff. Any suggestions?

Thanks, MetallicaRHCP

i'd try a hot rod deluxe ($699 American, i dunno candian)
i'd be good for blues and RHCP stuff, u'd probably need a good overdrive/distortion pedal tho, cause it's built in overdrive isn't the greatest for metal and stuff :)

Hot rod deluxe run $699 CDN as well. Picked one up last week. Love it, except for the background noise in "drive" and more so in "more drive" which I am trying to find out if this is normal for this amp.

Thats a tough one. You can't beat the HRD or the DRRI for your bluesy needs but I'm not sure it will do you any good for heavy stuff.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The Hot Rod Deluxe seems like a very good and fairly versatile amp. But I am not too confident regarding the amp's overdrive. Also, would any of you recommend this amp over the Vox AD50VT taking my style into consideration?

Thanks again, MetallicaRHCP

I would get a Deluxe Reverb Reissue. I have a HRDlx and it really isn't the most reliable amp I've ever owned. The Drive/More Drive channels can be tamed by changing the pre amp tubes. The clean channel is great. I had problems with cold solder joints on the tube sockets and resistor failures. This is the first Fender amp I've had reliability problems in the 40+ years I've been using Fender equipment. Some folks have no problems at all with them.
The Deluxe Reverb is just a better amp all way round. I wish I never sold my original.

You really can't beat the HRDLx. The AD50VT, while a nice amp in it's own right, is just not even in the same neighborhood as the hot rod. The HRDlx is a 40 watt tube amp...read...loud. The AD50VT is a hybrid.

Any drive channel is going to make some noise, and the more you drive, the more you will get. It's the nature of the beast. BTW - the HRDLx drive channel ain't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. A very versatile, reliable amp.

I would suggest a Super-Sonic.

I saw two guys playing very convincing metal through a FM-212. Not tubes but the $@!& for metal.

I owned an FM-212 and couldn't stand it so I brought it back. I'd love to own a Super-Sonic, especially the Super-Sonic 112 Combo, but they are way out of my budget.

I play the same style of music as you and have been through many amps trying to suit my playing. I played solid state for 10 years. Made the move too tubes a few years ago. I've had a Hot Rod Deville, Marshall DSL100 (which was great, but too much power for me), Vox AD30vt (still own because I forgot about it sitting in the corner), Super Champ XD, and just recently traded in my Hot Rod Deluxe for the Super-Sonic. I LOVE THE SUPER-SONIC. Easy to use, great cleans, very versatile good sounding drive channel with good chunk. I will be keeping this amp for a long time to come. If you are willing to spend up to a $1000 on an amp I would strongly suggest you wait a bit and save a few hundred more for this amp (sells around $1300 CDN) If you are like me you will spend alot of money looking for a distortion pedal trying to get the kinds of gain and tone you need for that style of playing with a Hot Rod amp. I've had the Boss DS-1, BOSS MD-2, Big Muff, Pro-Co Rat and Damage Control Solid Metal (which was the best by far and the most expensive.) But none of them satisfied me. The Hot Rod Deluxe is a nice amp, but not what your looking for if I think I know your style. The Vox's are nice but have too many functions to deal with and the heavier drive channels sound very simulated. Also, running outboard effects seem to sound like junk. I burned a hole in my wallet looking for the right amp, do it right the first time.
