Hi daniel wilson,

You usually can't date Fender amps using the serial number. Look for a "Quality Assurance" (QA) sticker inside the amp with a two-letter date code as described on the dating info on this site. If you do not have a QA sticker with date code, then you should try contacting Fender and give them the serial number for info.

Dating Amplifiers:

Contact Fender:

BTW, typing on a forum in all caps is considered shouting and impolite. Shouting HELP for a serial number is a bit much, don't you think? And no, it is not a "silver face" amp, those were made in the 70s. The "silver face" refers to the panel where the control knobs are, not the grill cloth, and the panel on your amp is black.

This makes me wonder if there is a nostalgia for "vintage" solid state amps out there. Not sure why there would be. Usually the price to repair one and the (lack of) quality outweighs the price for repair.

Look for a sticker like this one, somewhere inside the amp cabinet. This one was inside on the right, looking at the back of the amp. The two letters indicate the year and month. In this case, H is 97, and J is October (check the product dating link above). If you don't have, or can't find the sticker, contact Fender.

Yeah...maybe I was a little harsh on the "vintage" solid state thing. About a year ago, I actually had a Fender M80, and in retrospect, it was a LOUD, reliable amp that sounded pretty good. I think I picked up the head for something like 100 bucks. You don't hear a lot of nostalgia for old solid state amplifiers because most of them are garbage (don't even ask me about the Marshall solid state 150 watt head I owned at one point...the only upside to that story is I got almost all the money back that I paid for it a few years later, just on the Marshall name alone). The only thing I can really add is that over the years I have owned some really good amps and some really crappy ones: both tube and solid state. I remember the crappy tube amps a bit more fondly than the better solid state ones for some reason. Tell you what tho'...this may alienate some Peavy lovers out there. I would buy a solid state or modeling Fender before buying just about any all tube Peavy amp...unless I got some kind of hair replacement system for the solar panel I have on the back of my head and decide to join a Black Metal band or something.
