I'm getting an education. I swapped the good preamp tubes from the BJ. Result was that BJ sounds fine with the HRD tubes, but the HRD did not improve. I tried removing the 6L6s one at a time, and one each sounded bad, but one was quite a bit worse. Also, yesterday, I had found a link to check bias, and even with bias turned all the way clockwise they only got to 59-61, which i've learned is cold, and can be causing distortion. I'm gonna order me some of those Sovtek 5881, and if THEY don't work, I'll panic, run in circles biting my knuckles, then pull the board and ask for help.

I appreciate all the input guys. I've not been on forums much, but ya'll are great.

Talk to you soon,

Peace

Yup, sounds like bad output tubes. Be sure to turn the bias pot back to the coldest setting or at least half-way before trying out the new tubes. Adjust bias appropriately.

Good luck!

And don't forget to measure the plate voltage too!
