I've got this fresh Fender CS '57 Tweed Deluxe. Unfortunately it sounds like breakdown hell with the amp vol setting at 4, tone at 8; a Strat with selector position at the 4, vol 7 and the tone rolled all the way back to 0. Unacceptable crackly speaker at modest settings. My regular vendor is closed today so I thought I'd throw this up here.

Turn off immediately, unplug, and wait until the vendor you bought it from opens. No sense in voiding the warranty.

Okay, will do. I've had this thing for a couple months but have only logged a couple hours on it. I've never played it with the tone rolled all the way back on my Strats (I tried three different Strats with the same settings and got the same result) before so when I rolled it back this morning and I thought, "This can't be natural speaker breakup!" So I went online to listen to some YouTube samples of the Deluxe and, actually, some of those are borderline crap distortion to my ears. Otherwise, this is a great amp.

One man's "crap distortion" is another man's "thick overdrive". Are you sure there is really something wrong with the amp or is the sound just something you are not used to? Tweed Deluxes have a pretty potent overdrive. What sort of sound are you looking for?

It sounds flappy, crackly, unnatural. Not buzzy. I don't know that these amps are capable of thick overdrive. The break up is at such a low volume (4). Everything sounds like a par Deluxe to me until I roll back the Tone to 0 on the bassy pickups. A flappy, rumble sound comes from the speaker. I mean, it's sort of like having an amp that has speakers that clip sound at low volume. Not good, at least to my ears. I'll be calling my guy in the morning. This amp is unusable for good tone in this condition. Two grand.

Have you ever heard a Tweed Deluxe at full cry? I'm not counting You Tube. Given the fact that you did not like the sound of the ones you heard on You Tube, it seems to me like you bought the wrong amp for your needs.

Well, after hearing it at vol 4 with the Strat - and this problem only surfaced because I rolled the tone back - I don't think I'd go full tilt without checking with an amp specialist to see if there really is something wrong with it. The sound that is coming out of it is not a natural distortion sound, not a natural speaker breakup. It sounds like something breaking, actually. This is a great amp up until you try to dial down the tone to zip on the fatter pickup selections. If the tone coming off this amp as is is considered natural then it is the wrong amp for me, and I come from the school of pre-amping of Deluxe Reverb with a Pignose, so I'm not averse to distortion.
We'll see what happens tomorrow. I traded a Zinky 25 for this guy. I'm at a disadvantage in that I can't have an amp that weighs more than 25 pounds. This Deluxe - without problems - is the perfect amp.

There is absolutely no reason that turning down the tone control on the guitar will cause an amp to go into severe distortion.

How about providing a sound sample?

That's what I thought. That's why I was surprised. But, I've been ill for the past month and really can't be spending time with this problem by transporting an amp here and there so I've decided to leave the problem alone for now. The other thing is that I would probably never use those settings; I'm not a professional and so I play what I want, mostly trying to record original material. I played the amp today under the conditions I would normally set for guitar and amp and I realized what a babe this thing is! I bought a speaker/enclosure a few years ago, it's been sitting idle, so I pulled it out from under the boxes and I'll be damned if it doesn't have the same speaker! Daily double. But, I'll do a sound sample for you in the next day or so and post it to my page on Myspace so you can hear what I'm talking about. Thanks for your input.

Okay, I've made a short recording:
http://www.myspace.com/577012136
Track title is
crackle test.mp3
Amp set:
Instrument channel
Vol 4; Tone 11
Strat with AVRI '57 pups; 5-way set at:
2-3-4th position walk through
Vol 8; Tone 0 (both)
Finger picking around D, C, G and A positions.
Mic-recorded GarageBand, no clipping, no hot record levels; modest mic volume
Problem: The crackly clipping sound does not sound at all like natural breakup to me.

Sounds like cab Buzz.

Every 5E3 I have had, Victoria, Kit etc has had the same problem and a guitar pick slid in between the back top panel and the chassis fixes it. (extra heavy works best).

Those pesky back panels love to vibrate and sound just like your clip.

Try it and let us know.

I get the same effect with an extension cab. The crackly sound is coming from the speaker. I've logged about 2 hours on this amp. I would think Fender would have tested a $2K boutique amp thoroughly for cabinet buzz before it left the shop.
