Firstly i need help for FX pedal addiction. I've had a few pedals for years but until now i didn't pay any attention to rigging them up together and getting the best out of them (didn't even know they had to go in any specific order... yes i know). Now I'm making up for lost time and I'm obsessed with my quest to find myself 'a sound'.

I play a 60 reissue strat and 60 reissue tele through a hot rod deluxe and my current overdrive set up is vox valve tone, marshall shred master, Little big muff tone wicker and a boss sd-1.

It seems strange to say this now but it never occurred to me how much variation in distortion sounds could be achieved via stompboxes. 4 (plus the amp OD) doesn't seem enough anymore.

Of my 4 pedals the vox and the sd-1 perform their task of mild tasteful OD admirably, the shreadmaster is great but has too much of a distinctive character to use often (it completely changes the sound to a marshall sound really) although it is fantastic.

As for the big muff well i whipped out and bought this as soon as realized there was a hugh fuzz shaped gap in my set up that need to be filled. I'm not convinced that this was a good purchase yet. I haven't used it at an especially loud volume yet and i'm thinking that might bring it to life. At home, the best i can describe it as is plasticy. Now i'm it's a great pedal in the right set up but so far i am not in love with the thing. Any thoughts?

Now to my main issue. The pedals all sound pretty cool switched on together with the amp on the lead channel but A)this is hardly a practical setting and B)this creates all sorts of squeally mush which can get out of control pretty quickly.

I'd like something that really rips, something wild, that is fun and is useable not just for the odd part here and there and so far my search has lead me to the fuzz factory. I like those classic tones of Neil Young (especially cortez the killer), Gilmore, Hendrix (Axis bold as love), Nels Cline etc Sonic yet earthy.

I realize this is rather dull and long winded but heck you must be fellow enthusiasts otherwise you wouldn't be here and the problem is even though i live in London i have yet to track down a shop where I can go and try out the damn thing.

FWIW, I have both a Fuzz Factory and an SD-1. The sd-1 is brilliant for a mild OD, as you mentioned. I wanted something outrageous when I came across the FF, and that's what I took home. It can be hard to play with. It took me hours to find a tone that I decided was good to just leave it on, but it is THE coolest, most unique fuzz I have heard. Cleans up really nicely and goes from outrageous fuzz to a mild distorted tone with a dial of the volume knob, if that makes sense.

I personally believe this pedal to be more of a novelty, fun pedal to use. But it has potential to be flexible if you're willing to play with it for a while to find settings appropriate to your gear.

Also, I find the SD-1 to shave a bit of fuzz off the top, giving it a slightly cleaner boost.

You really ought to check out either some of the Keeley effects pedals or, my personal faves: The Fulltone Plimsoul or Fulltone OCD. They are straight drive pedals with the Plimsoul going more into fuzz territory. I gave up on distortion pedals...trust me I have tried them all. A GOOD od to push a good tube amp's drive channel is totally the way to go. It's that kind of distortion that is crystal clear note wise but has fuzz similar to kissing a bearded lady! Here is a good video example...there is another pedal Fulltone makes called a Soul Bender that might be right up your alley as well:

The Fuzz Factory is a blast to play with. You can make some amazing vintage fuzz tones, and you can also get some really cool rock and grunge tones that you can custom adjust to your liking.

The only drawback to this pedal is that it's not very simple. If you want simple, grab a Big Muff Pi or one of the 2 knob Fuzz boxes... the fuzz factory is made for playing around and tweaking out a unique tone.

My advice for the Fuzz Factory though: when you find tones that you love, write down your settings or take a pic of the knobs so you can get back to the sweet spot after you tweak it more.

Thanks for the response chaps.

I bought one the other day and despite all the many pages of info i read about them I was not prepared for the mayhem that this thing unleashed. It does indeed require a lot of fiddling. I especially like som of the weird octave tones it can give off.

Incase you are interested someone has posted about 40 options for setting on the z.vex website forum under the fuzz factory topic 'tears of sorrow'. I've had fun playing through them all.

Thanks for the suggestion mortalengines i'll certainly look into that also, i don't think my pedal purchasing days are over just yet (but they are for now).
