My esteemed college Blues Bondsman said it well as usual.
There's nothing wrong with SS amps if that's what you like. But we have had a few members that made some pretty arrogant and ignorant statements about tube amps. I don't know if they were just pushing some buttons looking for an argument or what.

BB you forgot, SS amps are lighter too in weight too.

Anyway, Princeton 65 welcome!

Thanks for the warm welcome... and heads up!

SS is good reliable loud power for gigs, and while the tone is close these days, it is the dynamics where they tend to fail. Pedals and preamps can make up for some of that, and get the guitar volume back into the equation as I see with Joe Satriani "Always With Me" using his pedals and guitar volume knob, but that output tube touch sensitivity thing is hard to come by. Such is the case using a clean boogie combo, basically a souped up Princeton, on 5 master for bass. It produces an amazing playability touch. Was also one of the best sounds I have ever heard come out of a bass. Tight and sweet through a 12" speaker, bass was a Squier Precision 5 string I won't ever part with.

Back to the Excelsior, that brings it down to a level where it is usable for guitar without tearing your head off. 13 midrange guitar watts (especially using many Strats) to me is like about 50 or more with a bass. That is what interests me about one. They aren't available up here yet, but hope they will be eventually. They really knocked it out of the park compared to those little Epiphone things, and I am sure the mod market will follow as well, although they seem great just as they are.

Like I said before, even if it's a total piece of garbage, the cabinet's pretty cool looking and you could probably fit a 5e3 circuit in there or some other clone.

I'm still waiting to see one, and I will be trying one out, then when my birthday comes around--if I have enough--hmm, an acoustic, recording stuff or an Excelsior amp?
Maybe more than one?

We'll see.

As for SS, I like some SS amps--and I mostly use SS. But I also like tube amps--so a small tube amp would really hit the spot for me.

I still haven't seen one of these amps, but low wattage and a huge speaker? Awesome! No idea if the tone is going to be good, but at least we'll get some sweet low end growl out of it.

The only SS amps I own are a Fishman Loudbox Mini for my Acoustic, an old Pignose and an old little Guild porch weasel. My main gigging amp is tube. Tube amps I've slimmed down to three. An Egnater Rebel with 2 112 cabs, a 6 watt 74 Champ and a 5 watt amp I built. I can use my cabs in any combination with my Weber Z-Matcher. I got rid of all my big gear a while ago. My most recent sale besides my POS HRDlx was a 76 100 watt Twin that I had for over 30 years.

I can't wrap my head or ears around SS amps. I have too many great reference points with old Fenders, Sunn, Ampeg, Dano etc. I need and want the dynamics of tube gear. If you like SS state amps, it's all good. They're just not for me.

I think you hit it square Supro.
So many younger guys don't have real tube tone as a reference.
Us 40 plussers probably sweat and toiled long over a hot tube amp learning our chops.
It is easy for us to say SS circuits do not sound like Tube circuits.

If they sat in front of my blackface Bassman and heard the difference, they would be floored.

My first amp was a little Gibson G-20 solid state; it sounds good (I still have it) for what it is, and it has one of the coolest tremolo/vibrato/whatever circuits ever.

Then I bought my first Fender tube amp, and the G-20 was forever relegated to stepchild status...I still like and and maintain/use it, but it doesn't get the love of my tube amps.

Back to the Excelsior: I am chomping at the bit to try one of these animals out. Since I play harp as much as I play guitar, the differing inputs might make a huge difference for me. Plus, tremolo has a huge place in my heart, so I just gotta give it a swing.

When I do, I'll report my impressions.

That is the stupidest looking amp with an even more stupid name. Who the heck is designing amps for Fender these days? Please tell me this is an early April Fool's joke.[/quote]

Wow! You must be REALLY cool!

Well, I'm definitely cool enough to know how to quote someone.

And the Excelsior still looks stupid to me.

It's the whole "retro/deco" craze, Bill.

One man's trash is another man's treasure.

Truly a timeless classic!

Like a brownface Pro or a blackface Princeton.
