I'm considering getting a Blues Deluxe RI and putting in the JJ 6V6s power tubes.

Here's my question:

Can this be done with only a bias adjustment? There is a lot of different opinions on the subject it seems. Some say yes, others say you'll need to change screen resistors and output transformer.

Hi 410DeVille,

The JJ6V6 and GT6V6-S both work with only a bias adjust. Both tubes can handle Plate voltages of 500 volts, and screen grid voltages of 450 volts (probably can handle even more). Opinions have nothing to do with the facts, and the tubes ratings determine whether or not it will work, there is no "maybe" about it. The output power will be much less when using 6V6 in place of 6L6, so not sure why anyone would think about needing to change transformers. :? I have used both types of 6V6 tubes in my HRDlx and they work just fine, although they sound closer to a 6L6 than a 6V6. Note that the Plate voltage can be higher with some 6V6, so adjust bias accordingly to get the idle wattage that you want. Don't just go by current, but measure the Plate voltage too. Bob at EuroTubes recommends the JJ 6V6 for the HRDlx, HRDvl, BDlx and BDvl.

The best sounding 6V6 that I tried in my HRDlx was the EH, sweeeeet! However, the Plate voltage was right at 450 volts which is the tubes rating, no problem. But the screen rating for that particular brand is only 350 volts, which is exceeded in the HRDlx by about 100 volts. I could probably increase the value of the screen grid resistors to compensate for the EH6V6 requirements, but for now I just use the original tubes.
