Looking at the original '59 Bassman schematic I noticed that the first tube was a 12AY7. The reissue has a 12AX7 in the V1 position. Why is that? The 12AY7 has a mu factor of 44 and the 12AX7 has a mu factor of 100 so the original tube gave the vintage '59 Bassman a much lower gain structure. Is the new 12AX7 a nod to more modern gain structures or was it done for other reasons? Any ideas from Fender amp geeks?

I cannot answer your question here, but since you MUST have the Bassman re-issue, I wonder if you would mind answering one of mine? I have a 64 Vibroverb Custom Reissue with the Diaz mods. I really want a '59 Bassman to complement this amp and be able to blend them. What do you think about the tone. I know there are a few of these used out there to buy. I just have purchased a lot of expensive gear the last few years and my wife is beginning to look at me funny! Thanks for any help!

Hey Stevie,
Yes I do have the RI '59 Bassman and it has incredible tone. I don't use it for high gain guitar stuff (I have a vintage '59 Harvard tweed for that purpose) so I rarely turn it up past 4 on the chicken head volume knob. Clean, clear, very hi-fi sound from punchy lows, lush mids and way extended highs that are not at all harsh.

I did put in a 12AY7 in the V1 position last night and my Jazz bass sounded like the bass of the gods. Truly amazing. Go for it. Your wife may be upset at first but when she hears it she will understand. LOL!

My my, I love my Bassman, but it is only when the volume is set above 4 that it breaths and comes alive - it is nice a lower volume, but it is GREAT above 4.5. But I am curious for you to explain a bit more on the difference on the tube swap.
