I just bought a Deluxe Reverb Reissue 6 weeks ago. No problems, I used it, never moved it, took care of it, etc.

A week ago, I started getting "white noise" or static when I turned on the amp. The noise is there whether I'm plugged in or not, volume knobs turned up or down. It's a constant noise that you'd expect to hear from a badly tuned radio (static, white noise).

I've moved it to different locations in the house, unplugged anything near it, nothing makes it go away. It starts within 30-45 seconds after I power it up. (First I turn on standby for a few minutes, then power it).

Tapping or moving the tubes with a drumstick does nothing.

The only other problem I had with this amp... since it's first day, when I powered it down there was a huge "pop". Lately, that pop has gone away and all I'm left with is constant static.

I'd rather not return the amp - I bought it off the internet and waiting for another would be difficult.

If anyone knows of this condition - please help me out!
Thanks!

Hi johngbongos,

You might just have a bad preamp/PI tube. It could even be a rectifier tube or output tube, but I would start by substituting a known good preamp tube into each position one at a time starting with V1.

Hi John, Same problem I had. In my case it was the tubes. I found the culprits exactly how Shimmi suggested, by swaping the tubes into different places. I also used the tapping technique. I had 2 bad 12ax7s. They were in the v1 & v2 positions. I put them in the v4 & v5 positions which temporarily resolved the problem. Eventually I replaced the whole set, only to have the problem return. This time it was one of the new power tubes. Brand new tube! Just goes to show ya. Replaced it. Scince then no problems 4 months on.

Hey friends, I think you're right.

I had an electronics / amp wizard walk me through exactly what you described... it's a bad tube. I can't understand the logic, but when I switched the preamp tubes' positions, things got better. I switched the 1 and the 2 preamp tubes. No more static! Sadly, now I have a low howling noise, but I'll switch the 12ax7s around some more (with power off), and see where this takes me.

One thing I learned from the amp wizard was the whole power switch, stand by switch order of operations. I wish these instructions came with the amp.

Thanks for the kind replies and info,
john

Well, sounds like you got rid to the static noise and found a microphonic tube (howling), in the process. A good 5751 in the input sections (V1 and V2), often reduces the microphonics and noise issues. Just my 2¢ worth.

BTW... contact cleaner on the sockets often reduces the noise issue. Just a thought.
