I've decided it's time to pay a bit more attention to my tone and how i use my gear and am a bit frustrated with my Fender HRD. Firstly i don't think it's ever sounded quite right cos whenever i play a note and let it ring the sound kind of farts and breaks up(especially the lower notes). I'll be having that looked at soon.

I'm looking to achieve a nice smooth clean tone (ala Ry Cooder) and have invested in a nice Ibanez analog delay and am looking at a Keeley compressor too but i've recently learnt a bit about attenuators and was thinking that this might a be a step in the right direction. I'm mostly using this set up in my flat to record but will also be using it for the odd gig.

I live in the UK and they seem pretty hard to get hold of. Should i get one? Can anyone recommend one that won't cost the earth but won't mess with my clean tone. Also can anyone tell me if i buy one will i also be able to use it with my peavey deuce?

You said you wanted a clean tone. Attenuators are used so that you can crank the amp up for an overdriven tone without blowing your ear drums out. Completely opposite for your needs.

I have personally MOD'ed a HRDx and brought it to life!! To get the sparkle you want an clean tones to really ring you need to change out the capacitors that run your treble middle and bass to orange drops.. I use 650v but keep the ohm rating the same. And add the silver mica for the treble side.. HOLY smokes it brings this baby to life!!

Absolutely!! Remember you can always go up not down.. It gives it more headroom and the end result is awesome!! I like to think of it as breathing underwater with a straw vs breathing above the water.. I have done this MOD on numerous amps here in the local area for friends that play Rockabilly. They absolutely love the sound it gives..

bluesky636 - I stand corrected. The changes I made are as follows:
C5 - Changed to .1uF at 600v Sprague Orange Drop
C6 - Changed to .022uF at 600v Sprague Orange Drop
C7 - Changed to 250pF at 1kv Silver Mica

Pooch

I was just ragging on you for using "ohms" when talking about capacitors.
