I have the Hot Rod Deluxe, but now have the opertunity to get a Peavey 5150 212 combo. Which is the better amp and why? Any comments would help.
Thanks

I'd go with the Peavey. Rock solid amps, They are way different animals though. Like comparing Apples and oranges.

I've heard really great things about the 5150 head.
I've played the 6550 which is really similar to the 5150,
And thought the cleans were surprisingly nice, but the gain
gain is where it shines.
Idk. Try it out, how old is it? Check the amp for any
pops or fizz, or low volume

Definitely agree with that! I would personally go with the peavey they are pretty rock solid. I liked the deluxe, but I just don't know how I feel towards the hot rod series... some people get stuck with real duds. However, the deluxe remains as one of the best selling amps in the market, and that's got to speak for something.

I also agree with bluesstattone in that peavey has their gain circuits nailed.

I feel like the 5150 amp would be a little bit more of a versatile amp, but the deluxe is great as well. It really depends on the sound you are looking for.

Is there any way to compare side-by-side?

I went ahead and bought the Peavey, tried them out side by side and the Peavey does sound better on the clean and drive sides. The only draw back is the weight, the Peavey weighs twice as much as the Fender HRD.

Glad to hear, get yourself a little folding dolly, so you can
move it in smooth surfaces, and Carry part of the way.
Thats how i use to move the hr deville.
Now the 2x12 jet city cab gets dollied and the head gets
carried.

If you want shear volume. There is nothing like a 5150. They are kinda hard to work on, so try to get a unit that is working well. Including holding a good bias & not burning out power output tubes.

Hell, my Classic 30 kills my BFDR. Which is being used by a friend. Damn four Sovtek EL84M and the Weber alnico speaker is so loud past "5." It's crazy.

I saw David Bromberg at a private party this summer and he used a Classic 30 and he sounded awesome. Great sounding little amps. I've borrowed and rented them on occasion.
