I just got a spankin' new PRRI and it has a great tone.. 'cept when it's buzzing around low A. It appears to be the front baffle as I can stop the buzz by pushing in on the top of the front baffle.

I've read online about fixes folks have come up with, but hate to mod a brand new amp since it shouldn't buzz at all IMHO. Anybody have any experience with this and any input on just getting another one? I've heard it's pretty prevalent in all the PRRIs and I'll have to mail mine back to replace it (not a huge deal, but still..). Kinda hoping I just got unlucky and that a replacement is likely to be ok...

Thanks!

Hi spiz, I don't have a PRRI but heard the same things about that amp which is why I didn't consider buying one. I agree that a new amp shouldn't need fixing, esp. one that expensive. If it were me, I would either fix the one I've got myself, or preferably by an authorized Fender repairman so as not to void the warantee, or send it back & replace it w/a DRRI (more preferable). My DRRI doesn't have that problem, or any problem ATM for that matter. Getting another PRRI might just be inviting the same problem back. JMHO

Thanks for the reply mojjett. Did you compare the sound of the DRRI with the PRRI? I don't really need the watts but did consider the DRRI because of the xtra channel which I could use for processed sounds.

No, sorry I didn't compare them. There was one next to my amp the day I bought it, but as I said, I already decided I wasn't interested in the PRRI. FWIW, the salesman said it had more midrange, but I don't know how experienced he was. Actually I find the 22 watts fairly managable. I can get it to breakup level w/o blowing my eardrums out (barely). One thing I can tell you is that I'm not sorry I chose this above any of the others that were sitting there.

I'd send it back. That's a lot of coin for a 15 watt amp with baffle buzz.

I've played it a bit more and the rattles seem to just get worse. For example at about moderate volume, say Vol=5, I get this bad metallic rattle around low C that sounds like something in the electronics area. So rattle in the cab and in the electronics... not good. It's gonna go back. Too bad because when it isn't rattling or buzzing it sounds really sweet and it's not even broken in yet. I may try some different examples at a local store to see if I can find one that doesn't have the rattles and will let folks know what I find out if I do.

Thanks everyone for responding.

Have you tried tighening the bolts that hold the speaker to the baffle?? If it gets worse the more you play it, it sounds like its getting looser and looser. I dont sweat things like that; things that a couple turns of a screwdriver or wrench can fix. Just tighten it and see if it goes away. Alsok you should look at where the ampis sitting. Sometimes, people will rest the amp on a board, or stand, and its not the amp at all but whatever the amp sits on. Or do you have anything ontop of the amp? I had a screwdriver sitting ontop of it, and it was causing buzz, or things sitting ontopof something in the area of the amp. If all else fails: i'll trade you a perfectly good working DRRI. I want another Princeton

Over tightening the speaker will make things worse. You'll wind up warping the basket. Speaker nuts should only be tightened about a quarter turn past finger tight.

The Princeton does have more midrange that the DRRI. IF you want breakup at a lower volume (and since you'll get more overdrive, you'll also have a quieter amp since it will compress more than get louder once you reach that stage) replace C25's (the coupling capacitor) .001uf cap with a .01uf. With mine, using vintage output singlecoils, and PAF's, i went from breakup at 8, to breakup at 5. And when i replaced the resistors that set the midrange, now using my PRS with Fralin PAF's (7.25ohom neck/8.50 bridge) My DRRi sounds exaclty the Lindsey Buckinghams on his version of Oh Well from the Fleetwood Mac live album from 1980. It sounds awesome. When i push the amps volume to 8, where stock it would start to breakup, now thats full overdrive at 8. Its a pretty easy mod if you can use a soldering iron, and will cost you about $2 in parts, plus you can completely reverse it.
