I just picked up a great deal on a used CVR. I think the amp sounds awesome! But I find that the hiss noise that comes standard in many tube amps is excessive. I put in a 5751 preamp tube and the noise cut down, but it's still noticeable to my ears.

Anybody have any feedback or ideas on how to go about taming this hiss? I want to keep this amp and really think it could be my #1 and maybe only amp soon. thx, FB

Hiss with or withour guitar plug in the amp ?
More volume more hiss ?

Bad connections/solder on circuit.
Could be a bad 12AX7 tube; noisy .
Or tube plate resistors . But this appened most of the time in old amp . Moisture in resistors.

Yes... hiss with or without guitar plugged in.

Yes... the hiss increases somewhat with volume but after 8 on the volume the hiss decreases a lot.

Every CV I ever tried hissed like a bag of snakes. I had an original 65 Vibrolux Reverb that was stolen and I was hoping the CV was similar. They couldn't be more different.

This is very common with all CVRs, and has been discussed over and over again on these forums. The only way to get rid of it and get that "True Fender Clean" is to mod it and have some of the wiring redone. But then, you're not really playing through a CVR, and if that's the case, I suggest you just go buy another amp. My CVR hisses a lot, but it has a completely different sound than most Fender amps. Even through the hiss- I LOVE IT!

For the price of a new CVR you could easily find a pristine SFVR and have an amp you love to play. The Vibrolux Reverb was a monster amp, very touch sensitive, very expressive, very breathy, very ballsy and arguably the Holy Grail of Fender tone.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Due to the lack of feedback, just the design of the amp. If you alter the circuit and add feedback, you can reduce the hiss, but the amp won't sound the same.

Are you referring the "negative feedback loop" on this amp? Somebody mentioned to me that that was the mod needed to get rid of the hiss. Are you saying if you get rid of the feedback loop, then the amp won't sound as good as it does now?

Yes, this amp doesn't have the feedback loop. Adding a feedback loop would alter the whole sound/dynamics of the amp as it is now. Gain is reduced with the feedback loop added.

Hi Guys.

I've also read a lot of posts and comments about how the hiss in the CVR's is normal, it isn't overpowering, you can live with it, etc, etc, etc. I bought this amp because it was much more manageable than my Twin Reverb, still had 2 speakers, and 40W was ample power for my needs.

Over time however, the hiss and hum became too annoying. The other issue was a very shallow reverb. I incorporated the Moyer Mods, minus the NFB loop, and it made a world of difference. I have a myriad of effect pedals but enjoy playing my guitars through it clean...except for the amp's own reverb and tremolo. I'm a reverb junkie and after the mods were made, the reverb on the amp is lush and deep.

If you find that you can live with the amp's hiss and hum...great. If you can't, check out the Moyer Mods. There's a wealth of information on the internet about it. It essentially reverts the CVR wiring to that of a '63 Vibroverb.

I agree, there are other amps out there that may not have the same issues but this was a reasonably inexpensive fix that makes a good amp even better. It worked for me.

Steve
