just chiming in as I have both a 4x10 hr deville and a marhsall JTM 60 2x12

The JTMs are great sounding amps. I have a matching 2x12 cab and the amp is just impressive sounding. does the job for me.

I'm not wild about the gain channel in the Fender, but I can get it to work for me if I set the drive at around 10 O'clock,, the best option for me is a Tonebone Classic and a Burn Unit.

and I agree that it's possible the bias on the HRDVL is not set properly.

I had both amps retubed last year, and they guy I use for this, knows his stuff. Both amps came back sounding great.

" The JTMs are great sounding amps. "

Yes, they are. And a totally different beast than most Fender amps. I've re-done several JTM 800 and 900 series amps. And I don't think you'd get those owners on the stage, if they only had Fenders to plug into.

The setup of those ECC83 and the EL34 output tubes are quite a bit different than any OD or Super OD Fender could provide, IMHO. A good EL34 is a OD generator, unsurpassed. No 6L6GC amp is going to really mimic it's tone.

Check out this site:

You will find out a ton of info.. Also I have worked on these amps quite extensively and have found many things on that website to be helpful! In addition, if you look at the schematic, Change out the tone caps the following are the upgrades I has performed:
C5 change to a .1uF @ 600vdc Spargue Orange Drop Capicitor
C6 change to a .022uF @ 600vdc Spargue Orange Drop Capicitor
C7 upgrade to a 250uF @ 1 kv Silver Mica
My analogy would be as stock it's like breathing under water through a stir straw.. After the upgrade it would be like breathing forced air.. The 600v caps will give it a greater buffer and allow it to breathe!!

Good luck!

Yes, Justin doesn't have access to his original site anymore as he is no longer a student at the university where the site was hosted, and he has moved on to other things (a job for one). The info is still relevant though.

Just wondered. The Hot Rod Deluxe III didn't come out until late 2010 and does have some significant changes, but I think those are primarily the taper of the volume and treble pots and the value of a few other components. I haven't studied the older model's schematics so, I really can't tell if the signal flow is the same.

Mine doesn't travel much so I haven't seen any of the problems with poor soldering. Yet...
