Is it possible to attach an amp head (for example, an egnator rebel 20) to a hot rod deluxe without doing any damage to either unit?

You can connect the speaker to the head and just leave the HRD turned off and unplugged. Fender does make a 112 extension cabinet in the Hot Rod Series.

Keep HRDlx turned off. Pull out the 1/4" plug on the end of the speaker wires. Buy (fairly inexpensive $5) female/female 1/4" coupler and plug the speaker into one end and a speaker cable into the other and to your amp. Make sure to match impedance. Speaker ohms should match plug ohms on the rebel.

It'll work just fine. Be sure to plug into the 8 ohm output on the Egnater and as the others have said only use the speaker. I have a Rebel 20 and the Egnater 112 cabs are great sounding cabs and are more "voiced" for the Rebel. I run two most of the time.
