Need help in deciding for a new amp my 3 choices are fender hot rod deluxe III, Egnater Rebel 30 head with 1x12 cab and egnater tweaker 40 head with 1x12 cab. Looking for a good reliable clean sounding amp for all types of music?

Hate to say this on the Fender Forum, but go with either Egnater. Both are much better built than the HRD (just do a search for the HRD's and see all the issues folks have had with them).

Those Egnaters are very nice sounding and quite versitile. Unless you are gigging or playing in a loud band, the 30 should do nicely...if you need the extra power go with the 40! I have been eyeing one of thier Tweaker 15 heads for a while now and am just waiting for the right time to keep from getting the Mrs. too upset about "Another Amp"!

Regarding the Blues Junior it is also part of the Hot Rod series. Improvements were made to the III series amps but if its the "Fender Clean" you are looking for you're looking at the wrong series of amps in my opinion. I'm not sure about the sound on the Egnater amps but the classic Fender sound I think you are refering to is best had from a blackface amp like the Deluxe Reverb. I'm not trashing the BJR as I also own one and like it for it's portability but it is not the classic Fender sound.

I have a Fender HRDlx I and BJr, and the latest addition, a Twkr 40 head. I am a fan of all three amps, HRDlx for 13 years, BJr maybe 6 yrs, Twkr about a month. I have also tried the Rebel 30 head a couple of times and liked it also, each of these amps have their own "personalities".

The HRDlx does clean much louder than the Twkr 40, Reb 30 or BJr, and that is probably it's main advantage. The clean in the HRDlx is very deep and rich, plenty of sparkling highs, classic 6L6 sound, that takes pedals very well, and the drive channel can be very nice for a classic rock sound with the right tubes. Some favorite tubes for clean can make the drive channel sound harsh. I hardly used the drive channel in mine until I tried the Chinese preamp tubes. I compared the HRDlx and Twkr head with the same speaker cab for a good evaluation of the amps. The HRDlx has spring reverb, another plus.

The Twkr 40 was a surprise sound, in a very nice way. Although it has 6L6 output tubes, it can really sound more like it has 6V6, a lot like a DR but a bit more low end, with more of the 6L6 driven sound. With the gain and master volume arrangement, the Twkr doesn't stay clean as loud as the HRDlx, but still has some great clean, harmonically rich sound as well as great detailed driven sound. The driven sound is just smooth and rich, not as edgy as the HRDlx, but just as loud. The Twkr has great controls for tone sculpting, the switches and knobs make for a very versatile pallette of sound capability. No reverb on the Twkr 40.

I like the BJr for what it does, great grab and go amp. But the BJr is not much like a HRDlx or Twkr or Rebel, and has much less power, 15 watts compared with 40, 40, 30 respectively. The BJr also has spring reverb. If you don't need the higher power of the other amps, the BJr would be a great little amp that takes pedals well, and does great clean and some killer, gritty drive sounds as well, just at lower volumes than the others with it's own character.

The Rebel 30 also has some wonderful sounds, and has the 6V6/EL84 blend feature, either or both. The Rebel definitely has the classic 6V6 sound, my preference was the 6V6 side of the knob, great cleans and very creamy and smooth drive. The Reb 30 also has reverb, with the added feature of being channel assignable. Limited experience with the Reb, I've only tried it in the store a couple of times.

All things considered, I like the HRDlx for the loudest cleans of all of the choices mentioned and reverb, and the Twkr 40 head for it's versatility and portability and sound (I chose the 40 after trying the 20 and 30, and after buying and returning/exchanging the 15 for the 40). You really have to try them if possible, they all have their merits, great sound in their own individual ways. And the version III of the HRds are improved over the previous versions, some reliability improvements and some sound changes that can be considered improvements subject to taste of course.

Thanks, i was wondering if i had the tweaker 40 and a good spring reverb pedal, would it be close to the low end clean tone of the fender?

I sometimes use a reverb effect in the loop of the 40 and it does really well, the loop is quiet and preserves the tone of the effect. As is typical, distortion in the loop doesn't sound very good as compared to using the same effect on the amp input. The clean tone is great on the 40 and the added reverb is wonderful, but it just can't get as loud while staying clean as the HRDlx. In order for the 40 to be as loud as the HRDlx, you have to turn the gain up on the 40, getting away from the clean and into the driven sound. The clean sound of the 40 is very close to the HRDlx, with more low end and volume on the HRDlx. For the drive sounds, the volume level on both amps is comparable.

The Rebel 30 with the tube mix and watts dial is really versatile. I own a Rebel 20 and it's one of the most versatile and best sounding amp I've ever owned in my 40+ years of playing music. I've had it over a year and a half, have lots of gig and rehearsal time on it with zero problems.
