Posted this in the Lounge and didn't seem to get anywhere. The VCXD speaker out says 4 ohm MINIMUM. OK so I won't use a 2 ohm cab. I have a 1x12 16 ohm cab...it's higher than 4 ohms, so why can't I use it? If I can ONLY use a 4 ohm cab, why did they not state that on the amp instead of making it misleading? Tech support told me I can only use 4 ohms period, end of story! I have a Blackstar HT1 and it says 8 to 16 ohms. The amp runs fine(not hot) and sounds great into the 1x12.
I'm just a little confused. Can some one clarify this for me?
Thanks

The VCXD is only rated for operation at 4 ohms. Using a speaker of any other value will result in an impedance mismatch and will cause a loss of output power.

Bill, thats what I keep hearing. And yes,I have the poor excuse of a manual, and it says MINIMUM
of 4 ohms. If some one told you that they would put gas in your car and that the minimum was $10...
would you stop at $10. I don't think so. I'm trying to find out why the amp is NOT labeled "only 4 ohm speaker out" instead of using the word MINIMUM. It's very misleading.

Do you have any understanding about how transformer coupled tube amplifiers work? I don't think you do and suggest you do a little research into the subject. Is Fender's labeling the best? Perhaps not, but I see nothing misleading about about it. The output transformer of the VCXD is designed to handle a 4 ohm speaker. Simple as that. Using anything else will result in poor performance and possible damage to the amp. End of story.

I see nothing in the HT-1 owner's manual that says that amp is rated for anything other than an 8 ohm speaker. If you have documentation that shows otherwise, please provide it.

going on about 3 weeks now playing a 412 cab 16 ohm thru a SCXD, no prob.

i have mismatched ohms alot and its ok IF you don't go past the minimum.

go ahead and jam that thang man -

While it may be working with a 16 ohm load, the amp is definitely not performing up to the level that it would with a 4 ohm load.

bluesky636 is correct in that a tube amp and speaker impedance mismatch will not allow the amp to run at full power. Sometimes the mismatch gives a better sound, sometimes worse. However, a mismatch of 2 to 1 will not harm the tube amp in any manner, at all. If you have a 4 ohm amp, it is perfectly safe to use a 2 ohm or 8 ohm speaker, no problems. Using a 16 ohm speaker on a 4 ohm amp is the limit IMO (4 to 1 mismatch), and is in the area of caution. I have used the C600 (4 ohm) with a 16 ohm Egnater cab with no problems, other than the sound was too low. You can even run a tube amp with the output shorted, no harm (see shorting jacks for protection). But, using too high of an impedance, up to and including open circuit (no speaker) can result in severe damage to a tube amp.

Bill, in case your interested-just got off the phone with Blackstar. They told me that the information in the manual re: the HT1 speaker out is WRONG and is being reprinted. He told me that the info ON THE BACK OF THE AMP IS CORRECT-- 4-16 ohms with NO adverse affects as long as you stay in that range. He told me that Blackstar has been working on that technology so a wide variety of cabs could be used.

Well, that's good to know.
