Bummer Bill. :?

Good plan on replacing the caps.

I like to settle those caps onto a small blob of hot-melt glue, gives them a bit of vibration support and gets them off the board a little.

Couldn't hurt to re-check the tube socket wiring/resistors and soldering as well, especially since you spotted a whisper of smoke in that region.

While waiting for the new caps, consider building a cheap Dim-Bulb Tester and once you've re-done the caps and checked soldering etc, do progressive power-ups using a 15W, 25W, 60W, 100W incandescent bulbs and putting it between the amp and the wall socket for your next power-up, it could help prevent/limit further damage while you trouble shoot.

I like to plug the amp into the dim-bulb tester and plugging that into a power strip with integrated circuit breaker, then to the wall socket. If there's a problem with a short the bulb will glow brightly, limiting the current to the amp, hopefully preventing damage, then just turn it off at the wall or the power strip, instead of touching the switches on the amp.

Bill, I can't help but think of something stupid that I did when building my tweed twin. So I have to ask - what do you have between the eyelet board and the chassis? I forgot to put the extra board under the eyelet board which caused a short at the point where I had screwed it down. I had the same issues going on, not to mention a very hot chassis. But make sure that none of your connections on the eyelet board are touching the chassis.

Hi, Snowy.

Part of my plan to remount the caps is to set them into a bead of silicone sealer like you do with the hot melt glue. Should serve the same purpose and I have several tubes of it handy as opposed to having to buy a hot melt glue gun and glue.

I've checked all the wiring over several times and all is good, even at the tube socket. When I turned the amp on the last time I could see that the smoke was coming from the solder joint where the wire connected to the suspect cap. The smoke was just drifting down, probably because of my ceiling fan. I am pretty well convinced that the one cap is the problem. I may pull the cap mounting board today for a closer examination.

The dim bulb thingy sounds like a good idea. I have read about them. I'll look into that further this week. Thanks.

I wrote about it in one of my earlier posts. I have the circuit board mounted on three 1/2" aluminum spacers (the 4th one in the middle did not line up properly with the hole in the circuit board) to avoid the possibility of any wires touching the chassis. I was very careful to mount the spacers away from any bare wires to avoid possible shorts. I have checked all the wiring on the board multiple times and haven't found any problems. But I will check again before powering up after replacing the caps. :D

I was too tired to pull the cap board tonight (actually I was just too lazy to remove the chassis from the cabinet so I could get to the back of the two bolts that the board and ground wire are attached to  ), but I did snap these two photos of the suspect cap. I have circled what clearly appears to be a hole through the blue cap can coating down to the metal can itself. It is right next to the eyelet hole which would account for the arcing and sizzling sound. I must have done it when I soldered that cap to the board. None of the other caps have any defects like this.

Hey Bill, I think you may have it right there.

If you use Silicon under the caps, just check if it's got Acetic Acid in it as many do, that's the Vinegar smell most have. That stuff can eat into electrical components over time apparently, I don't know much about it, but I do recall that bit of trivia. You can get a special grade that is specifically for electronics apparently.

Ah. Good point about the acetic acid. I'll have to check into that. I might just use some heavy foam strips under the caps.

Since I ordered 8 caps, I'm going to build up one with the same board I am using now, and a second one using the full size board that mounts on the top of the chassis with the transformers and is covered with the dog house (which I have). I'll have to see if I can run the wires without removing the circuit board and insulating board if I go that way. I also bought some strips of the superlock fastening tape to mount the boards and dog house so I don't have to take everything apart and drill the chassis again.

Got an e-mail today from Weber that they are shipping the caps 2-day for $13.00. Not bad. Should have them for Friday to work on.

I went back tonight and examined the photos I took of the cap board after I initially built it and installed it in the chassis. The hole through the cap can covering is clearly visible.

Here is a photo I took right after installation and before applying power:

Here is a shot taken after power was applied and teh cap sizzled:

You can clearly see the defect in both photos.

Based on this, I have decided to build the full size cap board and mount it on top of the chassis under a doghouse like in the original amps. To avoid having to take the chassis apart to drill new holes, I am going to use the superlock type locking fastener tape to mount everything. The new caps should be here tomorrow and I will build things and try it out Friday night . Wish me luck. :D

Thanks.

The new caps arrived today. I have everything planned out and ready to assemble tomorrow night. Stay tuned. :D

Bill, I think putting them into a "Doghouse" might be the best way to go...seems this would give you a bit more room within the chasis too! Great idea  Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Yeah. I'm sorry I didn't do it the first time around. Probably would have saved me a lot of aggravation (and a few dollars).

eXcellent!
Glad to hear the issue is resolved.

Now for some sonic samples if you get a recorder.

Or pics of the assembled and completed amp.
