That's my plan. Three if there is room. :D

I know what you mean Bill. Just take your time you'll be fine, sometimes when stuff like that comes up I step back and do something else for a while, pretty soon I'm charged up again and may even have a new idea or two on how to tackle the problem.

Thanks.

Hey, I hope your leg heals soon. My wife has had her left leg in a cast for the last two months following surgery to rebuild her left foot. Has about another month left. Kinda puts a cramp on things so I work on building my amp.

Bill, I hope your wife heals quickly. My left foot is rebuilt as well due to a congenital birth defect. It was the most painful thing I ever went through.
Snowy, I hope you heal quickly too. I thought I was the only gimpy guitar player around here.

Bill, that build looks pretty complex. It sounds like you have a lot of patience and really think things through.

Thanks. A little off topic here (What the heck. It's my thread. ), but here is an x-ray of my wife's foot after surgery:

Image

She has charcot foot in both feet (Google if interested) and the left one completely collapsed. It is now held together with stainless steel screws and a titanium truss.

How many guitar players here (besides me) have had multiple brain surgeries? Kinda explains a lot, eh?

Back on topic. :D

Yeah. I figured it was gonna be complex. I do have a lot of patience. Just ask my wife of 36 years. Being an engineer helps.

Wow Bill, I hope your wife is going to be OK there, she is certainly packing some hardware, it looks like she has half a Mechano Set in there!

Seems fitting she is the wife of an Engineer!

Bluesky, this is just a suggestion and what you're doing may end up working better for you since I haven't seen your exact layout, but I noticed in the latest pics that you have already soldered the wires to the pots. I found it easier to do by soldering the wires to the board and the soldering the wires to the pots after I put the board into the chasis since, in my kit, I had multiple wires that ran under the board from the tube sockets to the pots. I also marked every other wire with a blue sharpie so that I could keep up with which one I was on.

Now I'm going through the fun of discovering that everyone is using the wrong power transformer for the low power tweed twin. They're (Mojo, Weber, and Mercury Magnetics at least) using a tweed bassman pt which is only strong enough to run 1 5U4 rectifier tube instead of the 2 that the low power tweed twin has. Even Mercury Magnetics will try to tell you that it's a sufficient pt for this amp. I get to have one custom built now. Hope you don't run into any issues like that once you get it built.

Thanks. She is doing quite well. It's been 2 1/2 months now. We find out next week if she can start walking again. Hopefully she won't clank when she walks.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

You haven't said, but I assume you amp is the 5E8A?

https://taweber.powweb.com/store/5e8a_layout.jpg

If so, I see that you do have a lot of wires that cross under the board from both pots and jacks to the tubes. The 5F6A is not like that. All pot and input connections are to the top of the board on the same side. There are a few tube connections that run under the board that I do intend to solder to the board first before running them to the tubes.

https://taweber.powweb.com/store/5f6a_layout.jpg

There is more room on the tube side of the chassis to solder things from the board to the tubes then there is on the pot side.

Then I should be fine. :D

It's now 2:33 am Sunday morning. Didn't have as much time to work on the amp this weekend as I had hoped, but still made some good progress.

I assembled the main power supply filter cap board. The new kits provide 20 uF, 500 V caps vs the old 450 V caps. The new caps are slightly larger than the old ones and the board does not fit where it is supposed to, but I found an alternate location that works without mods, though I may have to relocate the cap ground wire.

Here is the cap board assembly (I haven't added the power supply output wires yet).

Image

Here is the cap board test fitted into the chassis. This location should work fine. The small pot mounted between the two tube sockets is the 50K bias adjust pot. It is mounted in one of two spare holes between the octal tube sockets. I still have to add the 27 Kohm resistor to it and wire it into the main board once that is installed.

Image

Finally, I assembled the main eyelet board today. I started off installing one component shifted one hole to the right which messed up the next two until I realized my mistake. A couple of component leads ended up too short, so I had to solder extensions to them. Should work just fine. The components that could be hard soldered in were, and the others that still require a wire connection were just tacked in. I still have to install a few wires under the board as well as a few flying leads before installing the board.

Image

Stay tuned for next weekend's installment where I will be adding the wires to the cap board and main board and hopefully installing them both into the amp. The work is slow but fun. The couple of mistakes I have made I managed to catch almost immediately, so I have my fingers crossed that all will continue to go well.

Bill, congrats on the 3000th...and that amp is looking sweet! I like your move of the cap board, I would have never thought of going verticle! And lastly if the Mrs. does clank when she walks, keep that glass half full and know that she'll never be able to sneak up on you :!: :!:

Thanks.

Actually, Weber gives you two options for mounting the main power supply caps:

1. A vertical board like I used that mounts inside the main chassis and

2. A horizontal board that mounts on top of the chassis next to the OT and is covered by a metal doghouse.

I was going to use the second option, but I didn't like how close the hot wiring would be to the doghouse and chassis. So, even though it is not technically correct, I decided to go with #1. 'Course, I could change my mind.

I take her back to the doctor this Thursday - 10 weeks post surgery. He will decide then if she is ready to walk on the foot. We have our fingers crossed.

I'll be getting back to working on the amp tomorrow night, but until then, here is a little teaser.

Oh, and good news today. My wife got her cast off and is now wearing a soft boot cast. She can slowly walk short distances with the aid of a walker. We're getting closer to the end of all this madness. :D

But next month (probably) she will be having cataract surgery.

That logo plate looks pretty good. And next month your wife will be getting hearing aids after you've destroyed her hearing from cranking that amp so much. :D
