Do you think it would be a good idea to isolate the input jacks from the chassis and run the ground separate? I have the isolating washers, would just need to drill the holes larger.

I didn't and have no grounding issue or any noise issue associated with it. In fact, I just put the jacks in flush to the chasis then tightened them down.

Ok. Thanks. I really didn't want to drill things. I've pulled the plate out and am putting things back together now. :D

I'll use copper plate ; this plate will make a good ground between all pot. You can solder a single wire from this copper plate to the chassis ground.
Don't need another ( wire ) ground buss. Fender Blackface amp are built this way and they are noiseless amps.

Input jack could have a single ground wire to the copper plate if plate don't go to this jack.

I read a good way to ground amp is to separate preamp section from transformer/ output tubes and power supply .

Preamp section ; pots , input jack and circuit could have their ground on chassis close to input jack.

Power supply and output section ; transformer, output tubes and filter capacitor could have their ground close to power transformer.

bluesky636 have a good day an happy New Year with this nice kit building.

I'm still thinking about all this. I did some additional reading last night before going to bed and there are a lot of differing opinions about grounding. Not sure which way to go. The idea of keeping each section of the amp separate as far as grounds go does seem to be a common thread and makes sense.

This is probably something that won't be resolved until the amp is up and running and I can actually hear it. I just want to try and avoid having to pull things apart again because of a bad ground.

It's now 9:30 pm and I have been working most of the day since about 11:00 am this morning. Took a break to go out to dinner for a couple of hours with my wife's sister and her family as well as doing some laundry. Seems like I am always doing laundry.

Anyway, I decided to go with the brass plate after realizing how many components had to be soldered up and things grounded. In addition to acting as a ground plane, the brass plate makes a nifty jig for mounting and soldering the various parts.

Here is the assembled plate with pots and jacks temporarily installed. The photo makes the soldering look terrible, especially the grounds, but everything is shiny and appears solid. If anyone sees any potential problems, please let me know.

I then installed the plate with pots and jacks into the chassis.

Next I started wiring up the power transformer, rectifier socket, and switches.

So far, the biggest PITA has been running the ground wires. I used a 40 watt iron with a large tip to tin the brass plate. I fanned out the stranded wire where it attached to the plate to get maximum contact and then soldered each wire in place. It took several tires to get it right and I used up a lot of the black wire which is also used for the speaker cable. 6' of black and 6' of white wire comes with the kit while the other wire is 12' per color. I ordered 20' each of black and white wire to make the shipping cost worthwhile and it still only cost $15 plus a few dollars shipping.

I go back to work tomorrow (Don't really want to.), so this will probably be all until next weekend. I'll work on the power supply filter board and finish up the power supply wiring and running the heater lines next time.

Stay tuned. There's lots more to come. :D

Bill, looking good! You have made quite a bit of progress already. Thanks for photos of your progress, sure helps to see what order you do things in.

And don't feel bad, even EC has to do laundry :!:

I have to go back to work tomorrow too...I have gotten lots of playing time in over the holidays and my fingers are sore, but chops getting back to where they should be!

Looks great Bill. I finished that little 5 watt amp I was working on. Sounds great. I just have to get the photos up.
I think I'd lose my mind tackling a project like the one you're doing. Great job so far. I like the brass plate. The last thing you need is to try and trace back a grounding issue. Keep the photos coming. Maybe I'll get inspired to do something bigger and more complex.

Thanks, guys. It's been a lot of fun so far. It is tricky trying to figure out what to do next only to find out what you did two steps ago is in the way of what you want to do now and you have to take things apart again.

I'm taking things extra slow as I move on. Especially when it comes to the power wiring. I have this subconscious fear of flipping the power switch for the first time and having the whole thing explode into flames. Jeez. Hope I didn't just jinx myself.

Anyway, time to clean up my mess, take a shower and head to bed. It's been a long day. :D

Good work Bill and nice pictures.
Brass plate is the best way for me. For the few amps I built , I bought some brass plates at my local hobby shop store.

I think for amp building Leo Fender do the right thing and probably the best.

Thanks. I can't wait for the weekend so I can work on it some more. :D

Looking great mate, you are making great progress, it sucks having to go to work when you just get on a roll with your build, but it's good to take small breaks so you can come up with a good strategy on what the next move will be in the build process. 8)

Thanks.

Yeah, at work today when things were slow I found myself staring at the schematic and wiring diagram thinking about what to do next.

Yep. that'll happen. Problem with me is I'm self employed. When I'm not working, I'm either getting behind or not making money. :?

I noticed a potential, although minor problem when looking things over tonight. Only one, maybe two of the four holes used to mount the eyelet board and insulator board to the chassis match up to the holes drilled in the chassis. Plus, the two holes that match are so close to the eyelets that they will short out to the chassis whatever is soldered into the eyelets. I'll have to drill new holes in both the boards and the chassis, but I'll have to wait until the board is populated to see where to drill the holes so they don't short anything. I may also have to pull a few things off the chassis to make room to drill and not get metal shavings in anything. PITA. :x

Don't sweat it. I had to drill the mounting holes in mine also. There were no predrilled holes. I used only 2 screws to hold it down as well.
