I need a new 1x12 amp with a fantastic Fender clean sound and a nice smooth overdrive. They are both great amps but does anyone know why the Super-Sonic 22 is so much more expensive than the HRD3?

Thanks

I would probably go with the super sonic. Its an american made amp thats circuitry is based on the Deluxe Reverb, but it has the gain settings that make it the super-sonic.
I've loved the clean sounds you get out of the super sonic, and the burn channel sounds much better to me than the Deluxe's overdrive channel. I find the SS to be a lot more versatile. its also a little smaller...
The Hot rod Deluxe is a great amp I might add, but I'm a little weary of the Hot rod series... they seem to have their quirks (not that the super sonic can't have its quirks... just in my opinion the SS is a more reliable amp... any amp will give you quirks)

Hi Steve,
i've had my HRD for three years now, without any problems... If I had to do it again, I would buy a DRRI. My advise is to compare the Super Sonic with the DRRI. I think they are both fine amps

If it were me, I'd go SS. They're both nice sounding amps, but to my ears the SS22 sounds better than the new HRDlx III. I also think they SS22 is more stand volume friendly as well as flexible with the fat switch and loop switch on the pedal. I have had a DRRI in the past and I would say the SS22 is an upgraded DRRI. The components in the HRDlx III tend to be a bit cheaper... I also think it weight 8 or 9lbs more which is an issue for me. I want my combos to be more "grab and go" and not hurt my back.

Well I sat and played both. Many times. The sonic 22 is tube driven but has the solid state distortion going for it. Since I play 90's metal I really liked it. But After 2-3 times coming backing and playing it..the sonic seemed like it was missing the low end and a little muddy it also had reverb issues out of the box. I knew it would bother me later. So I bought the Hot Rodd deluxe III (October Red) with emenince red coat wizard in it..the distortion channel gave extra gain it was smoother more of a late 70's Sound..not for metal...I honestly dont use the Distortion channel or extra drive anymore..it couldnt get what I liked ..90's metal sound that was thick like Zakk Wylde ala marshall..The hot rodd deluxe III suffers from volume issues turn the volume past 1.5 and bedroom volume goes out the window...so enters the CARL MARTIN Plexitone Pedal..It gives me all the crunch and gain of a marshall and I still have my fender cleans..unmatched I use the boost from the pedal and get the fender dream clean tone..the CM pedal I use to control the volume and tone soo all problems solved. One last note..The tubes in the hot rodd are alright ..but all the people I have read changed them out and the amp had new life put in it. Roughly 120.00 bucks. This amp is one most people modd the hell out of it to get what they want. I would agree on the low to mid grade componet build. You pay for what you get..it's not a fender reissue twin.

So end results fender hot rodd deluxe III 770.00+270.00 carl martin=1,040.00 for the basics..Just food for thought. The effects loop works nice and it takes pedals well. When running the amp without pedals Single coil pickups sound the best. The the spring reverb is really nice..but if you are a tone $@!&# people complain it gets muddy after turning it past 4. I run it at 3 to 6 right now keeping the tone intact. Honestly if I had it to do over again buying a Fender Amp I would of saved up Bought a Reissue Deville with the 4 12's and ran it with the carl martin. Everything said I enjoy the amp and will be keeping it not bad for bang for the buck. I know this puppy can sing...can't wait to hear it scream.

In the end my build will be this

add ons coming:
Stymon Blue Sky reverb 300.00
Diamond Compressor - (on it's way bought tonight) 200.00
Bk Butler Tube Driver 300.00
SKB Ps-45 Pedal Board - 270.00
Kirk Hammet Wah- 180.00
Deja Mini Vibe 266.00

When I got my SS 60 Watt I was actually tossing up between the DRRI and the SS 22 but the two clean channels and amount of headroom sold me...check out the SS 60 as well...I am glad I did

I have tried the SS in the store and the Drr and own a Hrdlx III. If I had the money, I would have bought the Drr. Mine was a buy with a particularly good special from the GC that ended that week. The Drr doesn't have the gain of the SS but, get a Plimsoul or a boutique drive/fuzz pedal (yeah...a CM Plexitone would be right up there) and your problem is solved. It didn't matter how I twisted the knobs on the Deluxe, it sounded GOOD no matter what I did to it!

Old thread I know, but I just wanted to point out that the distortion on the Supersonic 22 is NOT solid-state. It all comes from tubes. Just in case someone googled, found this thread (like I did)... I wanted to clear that up.

I believe that's another typo unless there is a 4x12 version of the Deville? AFAIK it's 2x12 or 4x10.

the HR is great for bedroom to small gigs
the SS22 or DRRI is what you want tho, just a fuller sound and spring reverb + just on the good side of pick up and carry
when playing with a loud drummer, the ss22/drri on vol 5 is purfect....if you want breakup starting at amp vol 3-4, keep the 12ax7 in. If you want it later on the vol knob, sub a 5751 (what I do) and then utilize the guitar vol knob.
OH & BTW, you prob want to get online and order a proper handle for the ss or drri, the RUBBER ones with 40+ lbs WILL FAIL YOU ! Luckily, I caught the amp when my handle gave~wheeewww.... here is a link ( they are so easy to change- (( there are T-nuts on the underside of the top of the cab already installed from the factory, so just plaug and play))
