Rivera was 1982-86. Red Knobs were the next generation, 1987-1993. No doubt influenced by his work, though. My source is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Amplifiers

Everyone here should own the 60 years of Fender amps book , it goes into great detail about who, what and when of Fenders amp building.

I refer to it at least every week when I'm on the prowl for amps.

"The Soul Of Tone"

Even a glance or two in it would no doubt answer some nagging questions and start some interesting threads.

The "Hotrodding Fender Amps" was a decent read too.

Hey, Guys-

Here's a couple links about "The Evil Twin" that may help shed some light

Hope this helps.

It’s a “Folk” name, not an official one and there doesn’t seem to be a hard and fast rule on that. I’ve seen both the Red Knob “The Twin” (as discussed here) as well as the follow-up, the “94 Twin” both referred to by that name. These two models are pretty similar but not identical, AFAIK.

There’s also disagreement about what the name means. For both the Red-Knob and the 94, I’ve heard different people say it refers to poor quality of the amps* and/or to the fact that it has a more aggressive gain stage than the old twins. For the Red-Knob only, I’ve seen people use the name because of the appearance.

*Not in my experience. I have a 94 Twin that I bought mine used last Fall and it’s caused me no problems at all.

I traded for my Red Knob Twin 4 years ago. I traded a Hot Rod 2-12 Deville for it. The DeVille was nice, But I wanted something to keep up with the Sunn Model T reissue that I have since sold.
The guy I traded, had been using "Yellow Jacket Tube Converters" and he thought it was still too loud. He then threw some unmatched 6L6 crap in it to get it out the door. Who knows what other things that this amp has gone through.
The Twin is one of the nicest amps I have ever owned. However, I have had it in the shop 3 times because of droning hum. The last trip changed the caps and now it sounds better. I've Changed out all of the tubes(mostly looking for the hum). I also put 2 Laney H&H speakers in it. They sound great, but I think I'm going to put the Fender Blues back into the amp. I also replaced the grill cloth to silver, other then the Cat Scratched Original Extremely Dirty Grey.
It looks and sounds better.
I love the versatility that the amp has. I generally use the 1st channel, since I'm a Classic player, But 1)you can pull out the Tone Knobs for boost and 2)you can use both channels at the same time.
This has to be one of the most underrated amps of all time.
I would buy another.

I realize this is an old thread but...

Not "The Twin" but its nearly identical sibling, the Dual Showman which at the time was "The Twin" in head form and without reverb:

Image

I've had the amp for a long time and I like it a lot. I've never had a single issue with it (knock on wood). It has great clean fender tone and it is very loud, perhaps too loud. Low gain crunch sounds great. A few drawbacks from my perspective are:
Crazy heavy
Incredibly loud - sometimes a drawback, sometimes not
High gain gets too fuzzy for my tastes

Also, I can't call this a drawback but it is a very bass-heavy amp. I typically keep the treble at 6+/- and the bass at 4+/-. May have something to do with the Les Paul I play most of the time.

It takes pedals awesome and that is what I use for most of the sounds requiring heavier dirt.

Great amp with great sound that gets a bad wrap for having red knobs. Yes it is PCB and I heard they are a pain to work on, but fortunately I haven't experienced that issue.

Anybody know what the original footswitch looked like?

I know that my twin of that era came with a 2 button switch (channel select and reverb)
The Dual Showman did not have reverb and I believe that one came with the single channel select switch that looks like this one.Image

I believe the '80s incarnation of the Dual Showman did eventually receive the reverb upgrade.

Any chance you could repost that pic? I can't see it on my end. Thanks.

I believe my amp is an '80s incarnation of the dual showman. I was under the impression that reverb may have been added in the '90s on certain models. Not sure though.

It may very well have been the '90s edition -- a year or two before they finally put the Dual Showman to bed altogether.

In 1990 the Dual Showman did recieve Reverb, but the amp was discontinued in 1993...all this is according to Teagle and Sprungs book...Fender Amps The First 50 Years. In the book it shows an ad from when the Dual Showman came out and it states in the ad, that the amp DID NOT have reverb when it came out in 1987, and the note below says that it recieved reverb in 90 and discontinued in 93...page 114.

FWIW
