Any owners of "The Twin" with the red knobs? I've had one since 1991, bought it used off a friend, so it's probably a 1990, maybe 1989. I think Fender only made them for a few years, I don't think they sold well. (Anybody know how to date them?) I used it a lot in the mid-90's, then bought a Vox AC15 for clean and a Mesa Boogie for dirty sound, haven't played it much since. Can't sell it because everybody wants the old Twin Reverb, not the modern Twin. Just wondering if anybody has tried different brand tubes, speakers, mods, etc. I pulled out two of the power tubes and set the power switch to half power, so it's 25W. But still incredibly loud. I've never turned it up past 2.

Don't have one, but played a few over the years. For dating check out this link and you will find out what year between 87 and 94 your amp was built. Thought they were good sounding amps. Well built for the most part and pretty versitile.

I am not much for modding amps. Prefer vintage tubes, but for new ones TAD makes great 6L6s and 6V6s.

I. Owned an Evil Twin, if its the same thing? For about 2 weeks years ago. I hadn't played a guitar in a couple years. At the time I was skydiving for a living, doing video and pics for tendum jumpers and teams. I downsized canopies(for those who don't jump, the smaller the canopy, the faster & more high performance it is). A guy wanted my old Stilleto 130, and gave me that amp. I played it for a few minutes, let a friend borrow it for a gig, then I sold it.
I just got offered one in trade for my modified Deluxe Reverb. I told the guy id get back to him because I know NOTHING about them. So id appriciate any info as well.

I contemplated buying one that was from '88 I believe two years ago at a music store...

IT WAS SO LOUD! But, and my memory is a little fuzzy, the guys there told me that the circuitry was designed by Diego Rivera when he worked for Fender back in the day... its suppose to have some separate gain channel unlike the earlier twin models I think?
(someone please enlighten me I'm definitely not an expert on twins)

Then again... they could have just been trying to sell me the amp (I thought of how much of a pain it would be to lug it to college... the thing was a beast)

Also... does yours have the nameplate that says "the twin" on it? supposedly that, along with the red knobs and the amp's propensity to blow tubes was what made it so.... evil...

I think the evil part was due to the extra wattage and gain stage.

Yes, it's "The Twin", otherwise known as the "Evil Twin" due to the 2nd high gain channel. And I've also read that this was one of the products that Rivera designed. Maybe someday it will be a collector's item and sell for a lot of money, ha! And yes, it's very LOUD. I was going to include a photo but can't figure out how to do it on this forum. I clicked "Img" but it just puts the html tags, doesn't ask for a file upload.

To post pics, they must be uploaded to a publicly accessible site such as PhotoBucket (free). Once uploaded to the site, you can copy the IMG code generated for each picture, then paste it in your post here. Then when you click "Preview" or "Submit", the pic will be visible in your post.

Here is a pic of mine...and yes they are HEAVY and LOUD.
I believe as windwalker said the "Evil" referred the the extra gain stage and wattage. It is very heavy and has a dedicated spot in my music room and it basically never moves from said spot. It's a backbreaker man and it is way too loud for bedroom use. This thing could be used in an arena setting or any venue for that matter.

Scarleg, have you tried any upgrades-- new speakers, transformers, NOS tubes, etc?

no...honsetly, I've kept the old girl stock.Everything is still original from the day I bought her home back in I think 1989-1990.Its been so long I cant remember.I am probably gonna try some new tubes relatively soon however the tubes in there seem to be doing just fine after all these years later.Let ya know what I go with and how they change my amps sound.

Hi Folks, Noob to the Fender forum. I'm not trying to hijack the thread. This question relates to the red knob Twin amp. I just purchased one from ebay and it's not coming with a foot switch.Do I need a foot switch to activate the reverb, vibrado or the tremelo ? Are there any after market pedals that will work? I just started playing guitar about 6 months ago and can't wait to get my hands on this amp. Thanks in advance! :D

Tsonic,

No problem with the hijacking. :) You can switch channels with the push-pull feature of the master volume knob. Reverb, you can turn off just by turning the knob all the way down. So you don't need the pedal unless you want to switch channels in the middle of a song. That said, try to get one. Note: the pedal cable is just a guitar cable, you don't need a special cable. Also, there's no tremelo on this amp.

They are sweet amps... I would have loved to have the one I saw in the shop... they were just asking way too much for it...

That... and I would ave no clue how I would have gotten it into my car...
