Hi Ben and welcome! You may want to do a search. There are tons of opinions, some great some not so great. Personally, I'm not a fan of any of the Hot Rod series amps, but there are many here who love them.

Its all personal anicdotal evidence, but; I had 4 different Hot Rods in the period of a couple weeks; 3 Deluxe HR, and a Blues JR. All 3 of the DHR went from working fine, to all breaking and needing repair. Mind you, i didnt get these because they needed work, it just turned out that way.
Personally, I really like the tone of them, i dont like the Drive channels though, they sound like (and essentially are) built in overdrive pedals, Distortion in the case of More Drive. I dont use amp gain much, exept for a warm slight crunch to work with, I get my overdrive from OD pedals and boost for stacking. I'll turn on my Timmy (was using the Tim, but got tired of having to move it off its place on the board every time i put the board in a flight case) as a base cruch. Its better IMO than the tube overdrive, at least at low gain settings because you wont get as much compression as you would getting the preamp tubes hot enough to put out the same amount of break up. Then, for more overdrive, I'll kick on an EP Booster, or for lead tone; Zendrive or TS808.

I always pay way more attention to how the clean/warm tone is on an amp im trying, i could care less as to how it sounds in a drive channel, though if it sounded great, im all for it. But my clean tone is what everything is based on (so is everyone elses). It used to be conventional wisdom that the "only" overdrive worth using is the amp's, I find this the enemy of forward thinking. A lot of times, yes, it will be better, but there are SO MANY fantastic pedals now; Timmy, Zendrive, Klon, a million tube screamer (everything comes in circles, all the ads for 'transparent overdrives' like the Timmy's and the like like to point out it doesnt have the "dreaded mid-hump", a sound that ruled a decade, adn will come back into vouge in the next couple years, so dont go dumping your mid heavy od's).

This being the case, the Deluxe HR have a nice, warm base tone to put od's into. My DRRI is a great amp, but until I modded it, pedals were an issue. All owners know that the Reverb and Tremolo ( i dont know why fender cant get vibrato and tremolo straight) can only be used in channel 2, channel 1 (Normal) doesnt have access to it. But, there's a bright cap in channel 2, so when you turn on od's, distortions, and fuzz pedals, they tend to sound shrill. I did a mod to allow me to use the Reverb and tremolo on channel 1, and I can use a patch cable to jumper the channels. Currently, I have a Y cable with 2 male & 1 female jack. I plug both male ends into input 1 o foth channels, and my guitar into the female jack. They're in phase, so I can go from one channel to the other by lowering the volume on one, and raising it on anoher, or I can blend the two. That, along with changing C25 from .001 to 001 to lower the headroom makes this my current favorite amp,

i've had mine 3 years and it's still going strong. i changed the speaker and tubes but that's just my personal preference. it's a good amp as is. if you want metal distortion look else where. but it is a good amp with a distortion pedal on the clean channel. if it suits you get it. thats what's important.

Let me print a retraction. I saw "Deluxe" and my mine automatically went to the Hot Rods, due to my recent drowning in them. Havent played a blues Deluxe for more than a few minutes. SOund wise, they should be about thesame.

It's all part of the same series. I found the Blues Deluxe to be too muddy sounding so I walked and bought the HRDlx. Big mistake there. Mine was too unreliable for any serious use. It's a crap shoot. Sold that and went with Egnater and have been a happy camper ever since.

The only advice I can offer is, try it out, if you like it stock, buy it, if it gives you lots of problems, get it repaired and sell it and transfer the balance of the warranty. I wouldn't bother with modding it to try and make it better. If you don't like it stock, I wouldn't buy it.

I love my BDRI.

Do a search on my user name and BDRI or Blues Deluxe Reissue. You will find many posts and threads by me detailing the experiments I have done with tubes, speakers, and bias settings.

For the record, a BDRI sounds nothing like a Hot Rod Deluxe.
