Hi guys,

I posted a thread a while back regarding tube rattle from my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Got some tube dampers, but the issue is still there so I want to get some new tubes for the amp.

Now, I've been playing guitar for nearly 15 years, but I am a total noob when it comes to amps and tubes etc. I know it uses two 6L6s and three 12AX7s. If I'm wrong please correct me! Is that true of ALL HRDX models? I have the limited edition one that's orange with the two black racing stripes over it. Any difference in tubes at all?

Also, after reading a bit I see many suggest getting tubes that are not standard Fender groove tubes. I see JJ tubes are suggested. What other brands should I look at and what do you guys recommend?

Thanks in advance! :)

Eurotubes.com, they only sell JJ's and they sell whole retube kits for the HRD amps as well as biasing videos on the site. JJ's worked well for me. No matter who you choose, always check the bias when replacing power tubes.

Great tubes too! Some of the Electro Harmonix tubes are great too. Tube are an individual thing as is the tone you get from them. Too many variables I guess. Again, I try to find reliable tubes. I wish I could find some NOS RCA's GE's, and Sylvania's around cheap.

Great suggestions so far, I'll add a little to the mix.

TheTubeStore has some nice reviews of the tubes that they sell, and can give you an idea of the sound of different types. I am a GT fan myself, and also like EH, Sovtek, and Tung Sol quite a bit. Of course I have all GTs in my HRDlx. :)

I also like places like Antique Electronic Supply, that sell JJ and GT as well as other brands. Guitar Center also has a huge variety of brands, including JJ and GT, Although the JJs cost more at Guitar Center so I would get the JJs elsewhere.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions guys. Much appreciated.

Had a quick look at the links. I'm in the UK so will try and find dealers of these brands over here. I do hate the price difference, but that's life sadly.

Just one more question, and this will be another noob question. You have all these models of tubes, what does it mean when they add extra letters? For example: 6L6 GC?

Saw this set advertised:

What do you guys think? Seems to be a good mix.

I just ordered a set from Eurotubes. The "Blues Option Set #1" The tech there says that they are awesome. Haven't got them yet. One of the preamp tubes tones down the gain a bit for a more smoother tone. I'll update after I install and Bias.

It really sometimes depends on who labels the tube. In the case of originals like a GE 6L6GC, a pentode, the G just means that it is in a glass case, and the C is a 30 watt, 500 Plate volts version of the original 6L6. Earlier 6L6 types were rated at lower wattage and Plate volts, 6L6 (metal case), 6L6GB (glass case).

It can be difficult to say with certainty what all letters mean on some tubes these days, many have their own way of labeling them, and some are translated from other languages, but a 6L6GC is generally a 30 watt 500 Plate volt tube. You might see WGC, the W meaning a "ruggedized" version. Or GCM, the M indicating a "ruggedized" version. Some 6L6GC are tetrodes and some are pentodes and generally interchangeable with each other. The Svetlana 6L6GC for example (famous "Winged C"), is also rated 30 watt, 500 Plate volts, but is a tetrode and will have a different type of sound than a pentode. The only difference between the pentode and tetrode in this example is an internal extra suppressor grid in the pentode.
