Question for the pro's!
I want to build an extension cabinet for my Hot Rod Deluxe. Page 6 of the Deluxe's manual says that the hot rod deluxe is "40 watts output into 4 ohm or 8 ohm. That said I believe that if I wire 2 Celestion Rocket 50's in parallel I should be ok and not damage my amp. Correct?
The Rocket 50's are 50watt 8ohm speakers which wired in parallel should give me 4ohms.

Please let me know what you guys think of this configuration. I don't want to damage my Hot Rod
Also I was thinking of doing a closed back cabinet as well.

I think I just answered my own question. I looking a little deeper into the manual I see that with the main speaker connected my connection options are.

Main Extension
8ohm X
8ohm 8ohm
empty
plug 4ohm

So I if I want to go with a 2x12 cabinet I need to buy 2 16 ohm speakers and wire them in parallel which will give me a 8ohm load.
I'd still like your input on this configuration. The rocket 50's come in a 16ohm configuration and for the price thats what I'm thinking of getting.

+1

I've never heard Celestion's Rocket 50's but I know you won't go wrong with a pair of V30's or Greenback's (16 ohms, wired in parallel of course).

Another question also comes to mind. Is it better to use two 10" speakers or two 12"?

That's up to your own ears.

Well I guess this turned out to be more of a learning excerise. I found a used Fender 112 extension cabinet on Guitarcenters web site for 150. If I made one it would cost me about that. So I bought it.

Good move. I have one for my BDRI and it sounds good to my ears/taste. I can't say the same for the Rocket 50...to me it sounds like there is a wet blanket over the cab. Just my opinion. If you ever do need to choose a new speaker, start with the Seventy/80 and go up, not down for Celestion models.
