I've built 5 of mine. I found the layout and shcemo all over the web. I have also seen true '57s for sale on eBay with lots of pics of insides and between docs that all oer the web and actual amps for sale all over eBay I have to say that the originals seem to have been done on eyelet boards. Not just a bunch of parts and terminal strips crammed into the chassis. Being on a board is still P2P since it is not using a PCB. All 5 of the amps that I have built are absolutely fantastic sounding amps. I love the Weber 8F150 the best although I have one with a 12F150, 10F150, and 8F125 the other 2 are 8F150 and I find those to be the best choice with this amp. I've tried the Jensen P8R in it and found it stiff and rther tinny sounding. Maybe if it has several hours of break-in time but in fact I am comparing a non broken in Weber 8F150 to an equally brand new out of the box P8R so the Weber wins anyway in my mind. JMO

We will be pulling apart a 20uF@500VDC Sprague Atom for our own peace of mind. We believe that if they were putting small caps in a large can to simulate vintage caps, they'd also paint them orange or red. In a day when shipping is at a premium, we can't see companies making caps and putting them in an oversized cans to fool you into thinking they look like vintage. Why not go all the way way and really make them look like vintage? And why would IC be doing it as well since their caps of similar values are also the same size? They would then have to pay top dollar to ship air inside of a mostly empty can. Doesn't make sense
Something doesn't smell right about this particular post with a sprague can cut apart and a beeswax cylinder that doesn't even look like it would fit in the cut open can staged next to it. Not even the close to a size or shape that would go in that can.

You don't think this happens? Think again:

Say the word and I'll build you one at my cost. That shouldn't be against the rules since I'm not selling but giving away, right?

Building an amp for someone at cost is not giving it away. You've already been warned about trying to sell your amps in this forum. Let me repeat the suggestion that you handle this through PMs or e-mail. The members of this forum do a pretty good job of self-policing it so that the moderators don't come down on people. You seem like you have some valuable knowledge to contribute. Don't blow it.

Just a little info. Fender switched from true point to point in 1947 but still made their amps hand wired until 1985. Don't confuse hand wired with true point to point. A few boutique builders use true point to point. TRUE point to point amps have no circuit boards of any kind including eyelet boards. The tubes, pots and switches are chassis mounted and the wires run directly between them with out going to a circuit board. The smaller components like resistors and capacitors are mounted directly on the larger components as much as possible or in between the larger components. The wiring is reduced to a minimum, some people believe there is a minimum amount of cross talk between components mounted parallel with each other. The down side is it ain't pretty and it can look like a rats nest.

Eyelet board was used for convenience to make amp building easier. True PTP amps require a little more thought as far as component placement goes. I read an article from I think it was Gerald Weber talking about "Fenderitus" which was a condition where, because of the materials used in the boards would become conductive and create noise problems.

This thread seemed to diverge from the original question-- has anybody tried the new Fender Eric Clapton amps and what do you think about them?-- to DIY Champ kits. That's ok, it got me interested in buying a Champ kit myself. So I will start another thread about the DIY Champ kits. Look for it and dive in!

I for one have no interest in a way, way over priced 5 watt one trick pony when there are so many other options out there. Signature guitars and amp don't do a thing for me.

As much as I admire EC, I was very dissapointed with the introduction of the EC Signature amps. The previous 57 Twin, 57 Deluxe, and Champ were pretty good (maybe not the best, but still something I would love to own if I had the money) clones of historic amps from Fender's past and were amps that EC actually used in either their original or reissued form. The new Twinolux (idiotic name), Tremolux, and Champolux (Sorry. Just got up with a lousy headache and can't think of the actual name. ) represent nothing from Fender's past.

The Tremolux did exist in Fender's original Tweed line but it appears that Fender did not use either of the original Tremolux circuits (5E9A or 5G9)

http://ampwares.com/schematics/tremolux_5e9a.pdf

http://ampwares.com/schematics/tremolux_5g9.pdf

instead basing the new amp on the Deluxe's 5E3 circuit:

http://ampwares.com/schematics/deluxe_5e3.pdf

Since there are no schematics of the new amps available yet, I have no idea what that means or what the amp actually looks like.

Personally, I have never like tremolo and have no use for an amp with that circuit. I certainly won't be buying one. :|
