Mod DIY has a true point to point kit no turret board just terminal strips, the way it was done in the way back days. that looks interesting. I plan on building one this winter. A little 5 watter. I haven't had time to compare schematics to see where they got the design. If all goes well, I may do the 65 watter.

The company "Illinois Capacitor, Inc.", and the caps just have "ic" on the label along with capacitance and voltage rating. Not made in Illinois though.

I have had a chance purchase & play this 5F1 tweed Champ clone. And once broken in, it's every bit as good as any DIY tweed 5F1 out there. Excellent brown tone & classic tweed Champ OD. It favors very well to my BFVC (with Vibrato turned out, of course). Very well built (both cab and circuitry. It can play at "10-12" all day and hardly raise a sweat. The metal foil on the back panel really is a nice touch to help dissipate heat. Which can be an issue with the way tweeds have their chassis mounted.

Note: broke two strings wailing away on both units during A:B testing.

It appears to be kind of a AA764 with one input , minus the 68K grid stopper on V1A and the power amp feedback loop, and an EL84 instead of a 6V6:

The thing about the ICs isn't the failure rate so much as it's the sound. Much in the way people are going to great pains to find NOS and tubes the Test as new, Old American made tube are in high demand over their Chinese newly manufactured counterparts. Back the day, IC caps (Illinois Capacitor) were made in the US under the strictest of QC standards and the difference was in the sound. Techs aren't working on amps with IC caps in them because the IC caps have failed, they're working on them because the owners want caps that sound good and are having the IC caps replaced with F&T or Sprague because they siyund better the same way they are taking Russian and Chinese tubes out of their amps and scouring the internet for NOS, and tubes that still test as new, RCA, Sylvanua, G.E., Raytheon, and and others because the old U.S. made tubes that still test good sound a lot better than the Asian made counterparts. So when I mentioned the fact that the custom Shop was using IC caps I wasn't referring to the caps failure rate. To my ear the failure rate is 100%. I was referring the quality of component that you would expect to see coming out of their custom Shop. The least they could do is load the boards with Sprague Atoms, Mallory, or Orange Drop caps. I also thought I saw some 400VDC coupling caps in there and those should positively be 630VDC rated capacitors.

I agree with the tube statements but I think the capacitor points are stretching it. Sometimes guitarists just lap this stuff up, that's exactly why Sprague Atoms now are a large Aluminium shell with a smaller conventional sized cap hiding inside it, they are made purposely to look like they did years ago, when they needed to be that large, because it appeals to certain individuals to see them in a build and it's amazing how many guitarists hear with their eyes.

I've built two identical amps, both documented at great length in these forums, the ONLY difference being one used IC caps and one used F&T caps and Mallory caps and side by side, a difference is not detectable in my two builds, so how is that a 100% failure rate?

You're welcome. It sounds interesting.

BTW, my Weber 5F6A kit arrived yesterday. I can't open it until Sunday, so I will start a thread about it then. I can't wait. :D

We may have dueling builds. I'll try to document it if I can. It does sound interesting though. It reminds me of when I had electronics in high school in 1972. Most of the stuff I saw, older radios, TV's, Stereo equipment was all point to point with terminal strips no turret boards of PCB's.

Bill,
I graduated in 1973. I have a quite a few less brain cells than I did back then. I had fun though. It was a cool time to grow up. We might finish up around the same time.

Bill and Supro, it'd be great if you guys could do some documenting when you start your builds, it does slow you down a lot, but you also give yourself more of chance to enjoy and reflect on what you're doing and maybe even catch a mistake.

Bill, the timing of the kit arrival was perfect, I bet you're like a little kid knowing that package is sitting there until Sunday.

I have every intention of doing so. :D

Yeah. It's sitting in the living room in two big boxes. I told my wife not to bother wrapping them, just stick a bow on top.
