Greetings,

My first post here. I'm curious about the 3 new Eric Clapton amps, especially the Vibro-Champ. I've always wanted an old Champ for recording, where you turn it all the way up and get the broken up overdrive through the little speaker. But those are expensive now, and if you find one on ebay, you'll probably have to spend more money fixing it up. At $1000, I'm wondering if the EC Champ would give me what I want right out of the box better and cheaper than an old one. And it also has tremelo!

As nice as those amps may be, if you are looking to spend $1000 or thereabouts on a Champ, I would seriously consider checking out the Victoria 5112. I think it would eat the Clapton Champ for breakfast any day of the week and twice on Sundays for almost similar coinage and a Lifetime Warranty!

"A faithful recreation of Leo Fender’s 5F1 circuit produced from 1957 to 1961. Just like the original Champ, but with an Eminence Legend 12 inch speaker in a larger Deluxe-style solid pine cabinet. This amp does not need reverb – there are so many harmonics and overtones we think you’ll like it just as it is."

+1 for the Victoria 5112.
For a couple hundred more and a touch more power the 20112 is equally impressive.
For tremolo get yourself a Fulltone Supa-Trem, best there is.

I tried to post a link to the Victoria site but they seem to be in the middle of revamping their web site and it looks like it's a work in progress.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I have been building Champ Clones and I believe that mine will blow the Fender away any day of thr week as well.
Look inside of mine and you will find:
Sprague Atoms
Mills 5-watt
Mallory 150s rather at 630 volts
CalssicTone trannies made by hand in Chicago
a Weber 8F150 Ferrite Speaker
Pine finger jointed cab with lacquered tweed finish
My amp will take on the Fender for sound and Victoria for price.
$800.00 for the one with the Weber 8F150
$950.00 for the one with thr Weber 10F150
$1100.00 for the larger cabinet that holds the Weber 12F150
Money back guarantee if not absolutely delighted.
I can furnish testimonials upon request.
I can also send pictures via email to any interested parties. Closeups of the insides of the chassis as well as overall portrait-style picture of the amp. It's the very best one out there. No kidding. Once the word gets out on these you won't be able to touch them for $800.00 anymore and there will be a waiting list to get one. Be one of the smart and lucky ones. Get yours now. {8^)
If you want to see one you can look here, copy and paste into your browser address line.

Guitarzan11,
Sounds interesting, not to be a tool, but forum rules prohibit selling and advertising on the forum. You could probably email or pm members personally though.

OOPS! My apologies. Truly folks. Didn't mean to blatantly stomp all over the rules. I didn't think I was saying anything that wasn't being said about the Victoria.
IMO? Those reissues are loaded with IC caps, & look like the coupling caps are 400v, they may be pretty and neat but I would expect F&T or Sprague and 630 v couplers out of the "Custom Shop" not IC and eho knows what. If you go to their website and nav to the EC line and then Gallery, they have all sorts of pictures of the eyelet boards that are going into the amps and you can clearly see IC caps all over the place.
Drfinitely NOT what I would consider top dollar stuff out of a very famous customshop.
That's all I was really trying to get across. I'll watch my step in the future sand again I'm sorry foir the faux pas

I think the difference lies in the fact that none of us SELL Victoria amps.

Interesting point on the caps used, when I built my first amp I too was concerned about the IC caps that came with the kit I bought, so I did some asking around the local amp techs and builders.

I spoke to amp techs with many years combined experience working on and repairing Fender amps about the IC caps used in the Fender reissues and general amp line, and each one of them told me that VERY VERY rarely was repair work the result of an IC cap failure exclusively, and if one were to take a look at overall cap failures through the years, all told, they had seen various other brand cap failures as well, when a cap failure was the underlying issue.

In the Fender tube amps they serviced, it is apparently usually board mounted Tube sockets or plastic unput jacks, faulty tubes, or faulty reverb units that should never have passed QC that make up, by far, the largest part of their repair work. Anyway, that's what I was told by a couple of different guys who make their living out of general amp repairs and warranty work, not from my own experience.

My main point with Victoria was that for the money the larger 5e3 Deluxe sized cab and 12" speaker compliment and Lifetime Warranty made it a serious contender for a prospective purchaser of the EC Champ that comes with with a lesser compliment of all those things listed.

Thanks for the tip, there's a store in town that sells the Victoria, next time I'm there I'll give it a try. But I'm concerned that the 12" speaker will sound too clean. I was guessing that it's the small speaker in the old Champs breaking up when you max the volume that gives you the nasty Champ tone. Maybe I'm wrong?

I've had the 5112 and 518, the 5112 is cleaner.

The build your own idea intrigues me. I used to be an electronics tech years ago, so I should still be able to handle a solder iron. I've been poking around the web and there are a few different companies that offer kits. Thanks for the recommendation of BYOC. Any others I should consider?

OK. I know I'm still a noobie when it comes to the internals of tube amps, but after scratching a bald spot on my head, I have to ask. What is an IC cap?

This has been the best place to learn about amps? Everyone here takes the time to help others out, or at least keep us noobs alive!

Hi! I got to play all three a few weeks ago. The smaller one was real nice and the Twinolux rocked me.I didn't get warm and fuzzy for the middle one. Twinolux sounded great with both speakers as well as with the switch set to one speaker. Heavy as hell to move around. Really left a great impression on me.

Can't speak for the other amps mentioned in the thread.
