Great point. Many will take that one sentence and run with it, disregarding the rest. Not good. :(

Yeah, I'd have to agree that setting bias to one point is a better approach, esp for a person just starting out swapping tubes. But, with today's tubes there is SO MUCH variance in the tone of the same brand/type/year made--- that I usually play with the bias point to get the best tone (not varing more than +/- 20% of nominal idle bias value). If I can't get the tone right within these parameters, I try another set of output tubes.

For me... too cold = sterile tone, riding close to crossover distortion. Too hot = too early onset of OD. Red plating is to avoided. If this occurs at or near the manufacturer's recommended bias point (like some TSRI 6V6GT)--- I go to another set of tubes.

Yes, the tone variance is between tube brands/types, not to be achieved with improper bias. Again, the bias adjust is not a tone adjustment, it is for setting the proper operating parameters for the tubes for best operation. Put the tubes in that sound best to you, and adjust the bias for proper operation. If the tubes don't sound good when biased in the acceptable range, time for some other tubes. It should be clear, adjust within the proper range, not on sound alone, ever.

We've already had those asking; "can I play with the bias pot to adjust the tone?" :o
