+1 stratele52, you can see part of the brown spot is on top of the label, it's definitely on the outside. If the tube were cracked, it would likely be frosted white inside. $45/hr is not bad at all, if a competent tech. :)

The Tube Store has a good page on blue, red, filament glow of vacuum tubes. Check the glowing plate in the tube at the bottom of the page.

Well yesterday, I went and got some new tubes for the amp..
Popped them in and No Cigar. I'm gonna take it to a tech tomorrow or thursday..

One guys bench fee is $45 .

He said that was also a minimum, he could look 5 minutes and find the problem and it still be $45.

the other guy said that his bench fee was $45 but would charge according to the time it took to find the problem..

The first guy has several openings in his schedule for the next two weeks.
the second said it would be a few weeks before he could even look at it.

Which seems better?

Sorry to hear that, but that's actually a decent price for a tech.
I know I'll get another yada yada from GT but who gives a ratsass. :? But that's the kind of stuff that drove me to sell mine. Mine was under warranty though. Hopefully it's one of the usual problems like cold solder joints, 5 watt resistors ect. that most all techs know about and can repair pretty easily. The big question is will you still trust it? Mine wound up with a lot of other problems later on that weren't even connected to the original problems. I was trying to make money with mine and it wouldn't hold up to gigging. If it's only used a few hours a week, it should be fine. If it's going to be used 20 or more hours a week in a gigging rehearsal situation, I'd get a decent backup amp.

Well I took it to a tech Thursday, he called me Saturday with the bad news..

turns out it is the Power Transformer, and is gonna cost me 160-200 plus the $45 for the bench fee of opening it up and letting me know the problem..
Looks like i've got some saving up to do..

Luckily I picked up a used Peavey Classic 30 the other day, thing works fine, and I'd trust Peavey products over fender anyday, I'm just gonna miss those cleans..

But also one of my friends Dad's is a certified electrician and says if I can get the part and the schematics he would put it in for me for Cheap. Part being around $60 bucks labor being around $40 for an even $100 over the Techs price of $245..

I'm short on cash I do have the 100 but it would be a big leap to get to the 245?

any suggestions?

That's rough. Man $245-75 is about what the trade in value is on the HRDlx. Taking the amp apart is probably the worst part. If you can get the same PT just write down where the wires go and take a couple of photos to back it all up. I had a bunch of stuff fail on mine but never a PT.
Nothing wrong with the Classic 30. They're rock solid amps. They are plenty capable of good cleans with some nice chime. If you get a better speaker in there, it'll seriously give the HRDlx a real run for the money.
