Hey guys,

I heard that the Blues Deluxe Reissue doesn't need biasing when you change preamp tubes - basically I want to change my stock 6L6's for the USA Red Groove Tubes - I want less break-up/more clean.

Do I need to bias it, or can I simply take 'em out and put new ones in?

Thanks guys, any help would be really appreciated!

On page 7 of the Blues Deluxe Reissue manual, it says "The output tubes in your Blues Deluxe amp are performance matched and labeled as a color-coded pair. When replacing these tubes, we recommend selecting new tubes that have the same red, white or blue color labels as the originals. Otherwise, tube bias may need adjustment."

If you have not yet purchased the tubes you want, the following link takes you to a source which will also give you technical advice besides supplying the tubes at competetive prices. It would be a way to verify the need to bias for the different tube.

Think I got it sorted - they need biasing if you change the colour or brand. I think. But anyhow, I just spoke to a local serviceman and he's gonna do the job for £30 while I wait - pretty awesome. Now I just need to spend £90 on a set of reds.

IMHO Groove tubes sound like garbage. Try JJ's, TAD, Mullard etc. I use JJ's from Eurotubes Blues Option #1. There's a lot better tubes out there. Be wary of Justin's site. If you are not familar with tube amps, take it to a tech. There are LETHAL VOLTAGES in there. You need to check the bias any time you change the power tubes on these amps. They are the 6l6's. Eurotubes has videos on their site on how to bias, but like I said, it's dangerous to be messing around 4-500 volts comming from the capacitors If you don't know what a capacitor is, or how to discharge the voltage, take it to a tech. Voltage is stored even with the amp turned off and unplugged for even more than a few days. If the amp is biased too hot, the tubes will cook and die in a short amount of time, too cold and it will lose a little warmth and sound at least to me, a bit sterile but have more head room and the tubes will last a long time.

If you want the best sounding power tubes, then you want "Winged C" 6l6's. Accept no substitutes.

But basically, I want to have as little break up as possible, ideally I'd like it to break up at about 10/11, as I use my TS808 for my overdrive.. would those winged C's cover that for me?

But surely, with a price difference of £70 ($140), the GTs are bound to be better? Or is this not the case?

Ed, I'm not an early break up guy, either.... Winged C's are the smoothest, most "hi fi" 6L6's you can buy. These are the real, authentic Svetlana tubes, and not the cheap knock-offs being made under the Svetlana trademark.

Here's how The Tube Store describes them:

"The closest thing available if you want the vintage sound of the large bottle Sylvania and RCA tubes of yesterday. Tremendous harmonic content and an overall depth in sound make these another excellent choice for the purist. They can handle solid plate voltages and are very well constructed. Consider these 6L6 tubes as an excellent choice for any type of music, delivering crystal cleans and smooth breakup... unequaled clarity and complex harmonics, plenty of sustain and depth."

Yum. A matched pair is something like 50 USD.
