Hi there,

I have a 6 month old Blues Jr which I'm generally pleased with. It's been back to the shop once for a new speaker as the original rattled, but the new one's fine.

BUT the volume has a habit of fading somewhat for a couple of minutes before returning to normal again. You couldn't risk gigging it as you never know when it's going to happen, even though sometimes you can play for a couple of hours and it won't happen at all.

If I thought it'd happen for Fender techies I'd take it back under warranty, but you just know it won't. If it would only die altogether...!

Anyone got any ideas, please?

Thanks a lot / cheers - Peter.

My only advise is to sell it and get something else. You are not alone having issues with these amps. Cut your losses now and get out while you can. You can also take a look at the thread currently displaying a flame by the title. "Does anybody NOT like".

If you have a warranty.....

Let's pretend for a minute that this amp is a DRRI. In that case, simply check for bad solder joints, especially around the tube socket solder joints. Another likely problem is the output tubes. Tubes are covered for ninety days, the amp for five years. Pretending that it is a DRRI means all faults are forgiven, and you can concentrate on the fact that all amps have problems, nothing worse about the BJr. 8)

Maybe.

We really don't know how many of any particular amp are sold, seems kind of difficult to determine with any certainty if one amp has a worse failure rate than another. Even if the failure rates for the BJr were better than the DRRI, I would still expect to see more of the BJr in for repair, simply because there were many, many more BJr sold than DRRI. I can't think of any other products made that were as bad as all that, yet still sells so profusely. I'm sure that any evidence that we are privy to, is a very small insight into the reality of it, and doesn't really represent a total picture. Modding was popular with many amps, long before the BJr was even an idea. In fact, many famous brands were started because of modding existing amps. MB with the Princeton, Marshall with the Bassman, etc. I wouldn't question a Princeton or Bassman amp just because they are popular amps to mod.

:o

Although, I did make a few trips to your neck of the woods (or lack thereof) and back in a Vega many years ago. I want to say it was a '75 model? Was the Pinto the one that caught fire when struck in the rear? Ah, the good old days, eh?

Yeah, the Pinto was "self-immolating" when struck from the rear.

We had a '75 Vega as well (Mrs. Retroverbial's first car). The poor shlubb couldn't get out of its own way.

Ah yes, now I remember! If you were going up hill, gas pedal floored to barely maintain speed, and pushed in the cigarette lighter, the car would slow down a little. I think that we called it a "Rolls Canardly".

Arjay, I had a 75 Vega. Bought it new. I would go to the gas station, fill it with oil and check the gas.

Thanks to those making suggestions on topic!

I wouldn't feel right about selling an amp (or anything else) with a fault on it. After all, would you like to buy one...?

As I'm not qualified to inspect the guts of it and know what I'm looking at, it seems that taking it back under warranty is the only solution. And hoping that whatever's causing it is apparent to the engineer.

Cheers - Peter.

What was the point of asking for help if you know you can't do anything with it? We don't have magic wands.

Sorta wondering about that myself......?

Have the amp repaired under warranty. Then -- if you feel you can no longer trust it to perform to spec -- sell it before the remaining term of the warranty expires and be sure to give the buyer your original sales receipt so the amp remains covered. Thus, your conscience is clear. That's how I unloaded my HRDlx. And I don't feel "guilty" in the least.

+1 I did the same thing with my HRDlx. The warranty is transferable. I disclosed and produced work orders for every sine thing I had done to that amp. It's just good amp Karma.
