HELLO FORUM!

Ok so I bought a used hot rod deluxe a few months ago, and am having some problems with it. I bought it because it was an American made and only cost me $500 at my local shop. The problem is that when i turn it up past 4 or so it sounds like something is shorting out and is hissing, or that the speaker is blown. I know that my tubes are also going bad but this is not that kind of sound. Also when i hit the dirty channels with too much gain it will usually be fine, but sometimes it will just crackle very loud no matter where the volume of my guitar is.
My main concern is the shorting out type of sound. Has anyone had this problem before? Could it just be the speaker? Could it be that some screws are loose?
Thanks in advance!!!!
Cheers,
Lambo

Sounds like bad contact (either with plugs, sockets to tubes, jumper wires, etc) or cold solder. Or both. Try contact cleaner on plugs, and jacks. And on sockets (pull tubes first--- I know you knew this--- but I have heard.... oh never mind  ).

And then pray for divine intervention. If that doesn't work, it may need to see Dr. Amp Tech.

+1 on the bad connection

Hi lamboga89,

It could be a tube problem, hard to tell as I've never heard a sound described like a "shorting out sound". But the "crackle" could be a tube or connection. Of course with age the filter caps should be checked also, another possibility.

If you "know" that your tubes are going bad, they should be changed. When an amp problem is not known, correct the things that you know are bad first.

Por favor, disculpe mi español, no se llega a la práctica con mucha frecuencia.
