i have a drri and i am thinking about changing the speaker for it. I'm looking at the Jensen p12r but i've read somewhere that a speaker like that may "blow"? I am aware of having to match the ohm of the amplifier and speakers but I'm not really sure about the watts. Lots of people like the Celestion blueback in this amplifier but that speaker only has a power rating of 15 watts, can somebody please explain?

What are you looking to get out of your DRRI? I'm assuming you want an Alnico speaker... the new Jensen are ok speakers, but there are better choices out there depending on what you're looking for. Instead of the Celestion Blue you can go for the Gold, but it is pricey. But it does sound sweet in your amp!

Lot of people like Weber speakers, I can't comment cause I never owned any... but I have heard an Eminence Cannabis Rex and LOVED the tone!!! But this was in a vintage DR... I did end up with an Eminence in my DRRI, but it's a 15" called Big ben, and it has been a very sweet speaker for this amp!

First off, the R-rated Jensen does not possess sufficient power-handling capability to safely withstand a DRRI's output, especially when dimed and using any OD-type effects, a compressor, and/or a fuzzbox. If you're joined at the hip to a Jensen, go one designation lower and buy the Q model.

The new import Jensens sound only remotely like the vintage Jensens once made in Chicago -- you'd be better served by ferreting out one of these "antiques" and (if necessary) having it re-coned for reliability. This is a common practice among tone junkies who crave the sonic vibe of a vintage speaker.

If you're interested in an alnico Celestion, the vintage "Gold" is a better fit for the output of a DRRI than the "Blue" which, as you mentioned, is rated for a paltry fifteen watts. However, all Celestion frames are stamped with only four mounting holes on the frame flange -- you'll need to carefully remove four of the screws from your DRRI's baffle to properly install a Celestion.

HTH

There is a deluxe reverb with a celestion greenback in it in a guitar shop close to where I live. It sounds really good, a lot better than the ceremic jensen that came stock in mine.

I'm still a little bit confused with the power thing, the greenback is rated at 25 watts will it be ok living in a deluxe reverb?

It doesn't have to be an alnico speaker, I just don't really like the stock speaker, sounds too bassy.

And if having a speaker with a lower power rating will lead to earlier breakup and distortion then I tend to see that as a good thing.

Rule of thumb is that you want your speaker maximum wattage to be equal to or more than your amp's wattage to prevent speaker damage, but also to present a resistive load to your tube amp.

That being said, people have run a Celestion Blue, which is a 15 watt speaker, on a Deluxe Reverb without harm, but that's an expensive speaker to take a chance with.

Different speakers will have different breakup characteristics; find a small company (Warehouse Speakers, Kendrick, Weber, Scumback) where you can email or call them, describe what you're looking for tonally, and they'll help you out.

I've had Weber California 12's in my Bandmaster and Webers in my Princetons; they make a great speaker. I'm absolutely floored by Warehouse Speakers and their G12C - smooth, great breakup and cost effective. The only better 12" I've found is the Kendrick Black Frame, but it's $150 and only slightly better than the Warehouse G12C.

Ah the search for the perdect DRRI speaker, good luck !

I have tried and tried to start an active thread about it and don't get a lot of response.

The 1997 DRRI I have has the Eminence Fender speaker in it, I find the bass flabby and the highs prickly.

The only place i find decent tone is at very low volume, as soon as i get past 2.1 the bad stuff starts to show up on both ends.

I'm leaning hard towards the C-Rex and praying its not too dark when I get it.

Or a 12A150 my all time favorite in my 5E3 clone (very tweedy) !
