My Frontman has a lousy, no-name speaker that rattles. Playing it through the speaker in my HRD sounds much better. Any thoughts on a good replacement? I'm looking at a Jensen Jet Falcon 10".

Eminence's Ragin' Cajun and their Copperhead are very popular 10-inch replacements -- you'll find them much more articulate and efficient than the chicom-made OEM speaker currently in your amp.

I have a Frontman 25R and to get rid of the rattle, I put three 1.5-inch long wood screws through the bottom of the cabinet up into the speaker board. Now I can crank the little thing up to 10 and no rattle.

Never thought of changing the speaker in my practice amp though... I think it's a great little amp for the price.

+1 on the Ragin Cajun. Sounds great in my 25R.

Regarding vibration, I found that the worst problem was the grille cloth flapping against the baffle board due to the increased bass response of the Ragin Cajun. I made a simple frame to space the cloth away from the baffle board and no more flapping. I also added two extra screws through the cabinet side into the baffle board in addition to two more through the cabinet bottom into the baffle board. My 25R is tight. It also weighs a lot more.

Much obliged, looks like the Ragin' Cajun has good reviews, and some were from other folks who put them in the 25R. I had wondered if some of the noise was the grille fabric, and it may still be the case. When I took the speaker out of the cabinet, it still rattled. Thanks for the info!

You can often find used Ragin' Cajun's on Ebay for $50 or $60.

Just be sure to allow the speaker adequate break-in time (when installing a brand-new one). The modern Emi's generally require 25 hours or so.

Rawk on!

I bought a 25R a few months ago to use as a practice amp. For that purpose, it has worked fine. Thought I would change out the speaker to a Rajin Cajun and take it on a gig or two. The speaker change did not make much difference with my Gretsch guitar but my Martin did sound much better. Even with a speaker change, don't think it would be suitable for gigging----just not clean enoungh at high volume. I only paid $99 for this practice amp and after installing a new $65 speaker, I still have a $99 amp. It is a good amp for your room, a great beginners amp, or a practice amp for a small band. I would not recommend changing the speaker if all you have is an electric guitar but if you play an accoustic you may want to consider this. Don't try to make it something it's not. It's a $99 practice amp and that's all it will ever be no matter how much money you spend on it. It is what it is.

Are these amps disco now?

I put a legend 1058 in and it made a world of difference!
I get the cloth flapping vibration sound now
Maybe a few staples into the grille cloth might help at the bottom

The cloth "flaps" because these entry-level amps are not built with a grille frame that stands proud from the baffle board, as with traditional vintage Fender amps. Thus, the cloth lays flat across the baffle -- acoustically coupled to the board. The more-efficient Eminence speaker is likely compounding the problem.
