Good Morning, Everybody.

My taste has changed and I am looking to replace my AC30 with a Fender combo. One of the problems with my AC30 is that it is stupidly loud. I play with a very aggressive drummer, a 2nd guitarist with a Les Paul/Marshall half-stack setup, and a bass player that thumps out thunder, and yet I rarely get to drive the AC30 anywhere past 3 or 4.

There are plenty of Fender amps that I can choose from but none that fit the bill perfectly. So my main question is, why don't Fender make any low powered 2x12 combos? It seems that if I want a 2x12 then I have to go to 60 watts or above? Is there a specific reason behind this philosophy? These are my amp choices and my thoughts:

Vibro-King Custom - 60 watts. Too loud.
'65 Super Reverb - 45 watts. Too loud.
'65 Twin Reverb - 85 watts. Ridiculous.
'65 Twin Custom 15 - 85 watts. Come on!!!
'65 Deluxe Reverb - 22 watts. Perfect. But only 1x12!!
Super-Sonic 22 - 22 watts. Perfect. But only 1x12!!
Super-Sonic Twin - 100 watts. Is someone having a laugh?
Hot Rod DeVille 410 III - 60 watts. Too loud.
Hot Rod DeVille 212 III - 60 watts. Too loud.
Hot Rod Deluxe III - 40 watts, But only 1x12!!
EC Twinolux - Stupid money.
'57 Twin - Stupid money.

These are all fantastic amps but I am starting to pull my hair out in frustration. Somebody help, please!

Thanks

Steve

p.s. Please, I don't want anybody to mention the phrase "extension cabinets" as that completely negates the idea of why I want a combo.

Try looking for a second hand '70's Siver-Face Pro Reverb, I had a 1973 model, 40 watt, 2x12", beautiful tone and reverb, almost like a half powered Twin Reverb.

I Got it for a really good price too as it didn't seem to be on the radar for a lot of players.

Heavy beast to carry though!

You seem to have come up with a correlation:

2 x 12 or more - too loud.

1 x 12 good wattage and volume, but just the one speaker.

What's wrong with a 1 x 12 combo? I would think they would fit your needs perfectly without the insane volumes. I have a nice collection of 1x12 and even 1x10 amps (wattages ranging from 15-50 with tubes and 20-60 solid state) and they are quite adequate for most of my practice and gigging situations. You also cut down on carrying weight considerably with a 1x12 amp.

57 Twin-40 watts. You can make a good deal if you are patient.
Maybe you can get in on a close-out sale since it appears that they are going to quit making them in favor of the EC type.

I've been running dual amps in tandem onstage for a couple of years now -- footswitch-controlled via a Radial Engineering Big Shot A/B/Y pedal.

Good suggestion Arjay.

My current 2x12 "Fender" "not too loud" solution involves two handbuilt 5e3's running together. The result is tone so three-dimensional, chewy and juicy it has fat dripping off it! 8)

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'm not sure why I have a prejudice about 1x12 combos... but I've just always felt at home with 2x12s. I'm going to spend a couple of hours playing a Hot Rod Deville III tomorrow and I'll let you all know how I get on. My local store has the 2x12 version but not the 4x10 version. Does anyone know how they differ in sound?

I had a Pro-Reverb back in the late '60's - awesome amp. I have a DRRI and I'd love to get an old Bandmaster cab for it. I've played it through my old white Kustom 2-12 cab and it really changes the sound
