Hi,

I bought an used Fender Twin Amp, the first version (without the vibrato like the newer one). It's an great amplifier, but i have some problems with it, and i wonder if i should take it to an amp-tech.

When i'm playing it, it sometimes get really noisy, and sometimes a high peeping sound (not feedback, it is in the end amplifier i think...)

Could this be fixed with other tubes, or should it be a problem deeper inside the amp?

Thx, Jorik

it could be either one, or it could be your guitar. i would have an amp tech check it out.

Thanks, Arlabester. A great initial example of how we're hoping the community itself will help out with answering questions like the above. Don't wait for an answer from Fender on stuff like this -- jump right in and post away!

Hey
From what your amp symptoms are, it could be both. The High kind of squealing noise is often a tube problem. You should check this one first.
But I also had the same amp and there was a problem with the 'low' (25 watt cut off) power mode. From what I can remember from what the amp tech guy said is that the design of the low mode had a problem ( easily correctable) and that the best way to preserve the amp is to keep it always at the high mode. Since there's about a 3db difference in both modes...

First be very cautious when working inside any amplifier, there are very high current loads that can and will kill if given the opportunity. With that said unless you are knowledgeable about electronics and electricity take it to a pro, your life really depends on it. If you feel comfortable doing your own diagnostics / repairs you need a wooden chopstick to start with. Turn on your amp and let things warm up. Litely tap each of your power tubes, chances are one has gone microphonic. If this is the case you will know imediately when you tap the offending tube. You should replace tubes with matched sets. If it is not the power tubes then do the same tap test on your preamp bottles. If neither then stop and take it to a Fender authorized repair center so they can make it right. Oh yeah also make sure the bias is set correctly. Here is the link to th Fender manuals if you need it. http://www.fender.com/support/electronic_products.php

alright, thanks for your replies. When i'm back to holland (now in california) i will search down an fender amp tech who can take a look.

i also find that the 25watt mode is more noisy then the 100watt.
