I love my Blues Jr., but this hasn't always been the case. When I first purchased it I didn't like the sound and thought it sounded a little tinny. In my opinion the problem is like Retro mentioned earlier the combo cabinet is too small. I have used mine now with two different extension cabinets (both closed back) and the thing really rocks with beautiful tone. I wish they produced the Blues Jr. as a head only, I'd probably be first in line to purchase one. Right now I am using this amp with a 112 closed back extension cab with the combo speaker unplugged and and the extn. cab plugged into the existing jack.

I ended up not buying the BJ due to some of the guidance I received here. I purchased a Carvin V3m Micro Head. The head itself is superb for me. Temporarily I am using an old and cheap Marshall 4 x 12 cab until I can spring for a better cab.

Thank you to all who posted your views reference the blues junior. I appreciate the advice.

I just thought of something I don't like about my Blues Junior!

The leather strap handle is pretty uncomfortable if you have to carry the amp for more than a minute.

Did we not have a member convert a BJ into a head unit about 2 years ago or so? Seems to me he used the empty head housing from a small BlackHeart amp. I think he also had to bend the chassis steel so the tubes would not be positioned horizontally. The end result was a head with the controls facing forward at the bottom of the head with the lettering right-side-up so you could read it and then the re-bent chassis provided the tubes with an upright posture in the back area of the head. I remeber considering the procedure for my own BJ but upon further research it proved to be either cost prohibitive or maybe it was that you had to find a donor amp head. I forget.

Maybe it wasn't here. Maybe I saw this on another forum.

Edit:
Nope. Here we go.

Now I remember. Huge money and huge effort involved to replicate that project.

+1

It did turn out quite nice though -- very skillful re-engineering and a polished, professional execution.

If the BJ is one of the first Fender tube amps someone owns then it will sound sweet to them, specially if it's their first tube amp.

When you "graduate" and hear/own other "real" Fender amps then you'll understand why some will tell you they don't care for the BJ. End of story. You'll notice that the ones who speak up have a big collection of Fender amps, new and vintage, so they've heard it all... while the BJ owners probably own only one Fender amp, a BJ, oh and maybe a HRD

A used DRRI for around $600 is the best amp you can buy, pound for pound!!

My very fist Fender amp in 1965 was a Vibrolux Reverb. My first practice amp was a Dano DM 10. That was also a nice sounding amp. It's a shame amps are sold by their price point now instead of the way they sound and build quality. I'll be building a true PTP amp with no turret board after the holidays. I r agree with Cedarblues. If that's all you know, it's great.

You just spelled out the solution to the equation we've all been chewing over.
I know I've said as much before but I think perhaps you've said it in plainer language.
I love the picture you paint. Once you know what a real amp sounds like ....

I do so love the BF Vibrolux Reverb. Arguably the Holy Grail of Fender Tone.

IMO anyways ....

This "it's only an amp for people who don't really know about valve amps, and what can you expect from beginners" malarkey, is a load of patronising tosh.

You can get better anything if you're want to spend the extra money. And maybe you can get better than the BJ for the same money even. But if you're happy with what you have, and the BJ does the job you need it to do, then don't be put off by this elitist rubbish. The BJ remains a good solid blue collar instant plug and go amp.

There's a reason why it's one of Fenders best sellers. And there's a reason why I always get compliments on the clarity and depth of my tone when I play live with mine. Once I changed the speaker (admittedly a weakness), I've never looked back and dont anticipate looking forward anytime soon..

That's why I simply replied with an LOL, it is funny as heck on a couple of levels.

I was sure that was an imitation of another member with a vendetta against the BJr. (maybe not :( )

No way you can take a comment like that seriously. Again....

I don't find the comments elitist rubbish, just opinions. Opinions can be nice or just plain harsh. The thing is tone is very subjective. I never get upset about tone comments. Though you would think the way some people act and defend their gear someone made a comment about their sister. Comments can be made without personal attacks. Myself, I get curious when something new comes and is suggested by others. When I was amp shopping after my HRDlx meltdown, I tried the Blued Deluxe, Deville, but they were to me, too loud, the Blues Deluxe was too muddy then I tried the Blues Jr and I found it way too boxy and one dimensional. I didn't want a DRRI, I wanted something different, I'm not a Marshall guy then EgFryer pointed me to the Egnater Rebel 20, this was before he was EgFryer. It was the freshest sounding amp I've played in ages and still is.

The thing is, all members have to stop with the personal, sarcastic name calling over gear opinions. Just take it as it is. Just someone else's ears talking. Most of my comments involve reliability. Gear needs to be reliable no matter if you play five nights a week on a stage or once a week in your garage or bedroom. They are the comments I take most seriously.
