Seems pretty clear, no problem until the BJr was seen, then it suddenly sounded bad. I think that is very telling.

Seriously dude?? You got issues man, I have no idea why I'm even in this thread

Ok I give up, the BJ and ALL the HRD amps are the greatest amps Fender ever made! Do NOT attempt to buy or even plug into any other Fender amp, new or old, you're wasting your time and it might explode and cause serious damage. Let us haters take the risk, after all, we're just a bunch of trolls anyways...

+1, I don't think he's posted since his Silverface Reissue post. Hopefully he's hunkered down in the workshop filling orders.

Snowy

He's just taking a break from trolling

Or maybe he's tired of giving great advice but no one is listening...

Now that is wierd. I was on page ten.

I can hear Bob and Doug singing, "Ku-ru, ku-ku, ku-ru, ku-ku,' to the tune of the "Twilight Zone" theme.

I don't think any of Blues Junior owners/fans believe that our little amps are the best. Heck, if I had a bunch of extra money, I'd buy a DRRI or something fancier (but I'd keep my Blues Junior) We're just saying that we like our Blues Juniors -- sound, size, and price.

Just this evening after I got home from work, I had the house to myself so I plugged my Strat straight into the BJr and cranked it up. The thing never fails to make me smile when I hear it.

Tomorrow I'll toss it in the trunk of the car along with my wife's Fender Rumble bass amp and my pedalboard bag and go to rehearsal. The next night I'll take it to our weekly pub gig. We'll make it from the car into the pub in a single trip, and set up in about 10 minutes. It's perfect for my purposes.

That's why it seems like trolling when someone tells me my amp isn't great. Great is relative.

Before I bought myWeber 5F6A kit, I seriously considered buying a used Blues Jr and modifying it to use 6V6s. Doesn't look like it would be that hard. Anybody tried that?

I haven't tried it, but I think that it is a good idea. From what I understand, it's a simple matter of changing the sockets, as the 6V6 is close enough to the EL84 as far as filament current (lower for the 6V6), output power and impedance needs.

You should try it.

Shimmi, back in '83 when Bob and Doug were near the peak of their popularity I had boarded a plane and was sitting next to a friend of mine and his girlfriend. I wasn't expecting to see them there. They were both stoned smooth out of thier skulls. We were sitting way at the back of the plane and I had the aisle seat. We sat there at the terminal for about 25 -30 minutes without moving. Everyone on board was getting restless and wondering what the delay was about. Then I saw a pilot come running at a full gallop out to the plane carrying a small suitcase. I deduced there had been a change of pilots and he was late for work. He was out of breath when he climbed the stairs to board the plane. I leaned out into the aisle and hollered pretty loudly down at the pilot, "Take off, eh?" in my best Doug voice. The whole plane roared with laughter. My stoned friends didn't speak for the entire flight because they were still laughing when I disembarked an hour later.

Great story BMW-KTM! Maybe the pilot was with Bob and Doug before, and he spaced his flight for a few.

bluesky636,

I just might do that one of these days. It would have to be the next used one that I have a chance to get, I don't want to give up the sound of the one that I have now. I will have to avoid hearing a "real" amp until then, so as not to spoil my illusion.

Wow, reading all 11 pages in a single sitting is very time intensive. Anyway, I don't gig, all I do is play in my bedroom but I would like to purchase my first tube amp in the near future. Originally I was set on the DRRI but my concern is volume since I live in a condo and don't really feel like pissing off the people above and below me.

The Blues Jr's volume/master volume seems to be perfect for someone like me who just plays at home. I should also mention I have a Marshall ext cab I can use if the Blues Jr's shortcoming is the speaker (which reading through the thread, it seems to be one of the bigger issues).

So I guess my question is for my circumstances, would anyone still recommend the DRRI? It just seems like overkill for someone like myself who is not a professional musician. Also, I'd be willing to listen to suggestions outside of the Fender family that would work well for me. Unfortunately I live in Hawaii so the amount of testing I can do is somewhat limited so I need to rely on other's input to a larger degree.

Yep. It's only seven more watts more than a Blues Jr., built better, sounds way better and you won't need an extension cab.

I know, but my concern is how loud the amp is. It only has 1 volume control correct? For me to get the tubes to start breaking up, wouldn't I have to crank it up pretty high? Wish they had a master volume on that amp....

I'd rather have a great clean and great reverb than a master volume and get some grit from a tube based distortion pedal. I have an Egnater Rebel 20 and the distortion is incredible even at low volumes. To my ears I can actually get it to sound more like a classic Fender using the 6V6 side of the tube mix control than the Blues Jr. which uses EL84's. The watts control and Master volume control see to that. But in the Fender lineup I'd still go with the DRRI. It's just a great piece of gear and has two real channels with separate EQ.
