OK, I'm the newbie on the block and this is my first post. I need a little help. I have several amps and guitars but my favorite to play is my Gretsch Model 6119 (tennessee rose) which I play throught a 1965 fender bassman and 1963 fender reverb tank. My parents gave this bassman amp when I was 16 and it still sounds awesome. I will never get rid of it but is is heavy and I'm not getting any younger. I want to find another amp to gig with and my gigs are small clubs. I'v been looking at the Fender Blues Delux Reissue. Tone is what I'm most intersested in. Does anyone have experience playing these two amps and can advise me on how much the Blues Delux might compare to the Basseman? I appreciate your opinion.

A Blues Deluxe ain't NEVER gonna sound like an AB165 Bassman -- I don't care how many hundreds of dollars someone spends to mod it, upgrade it, or otherwise attempt the impossible.

You want a quasi-Bassman tone from a new Fender amp?

Try a DRRI -- clip the "bright cap" in the vibrato channel, buy some hand-selected glass, have it biased correctly, then replace the speaker with either a Weber 12A150S or a vintage (ie: Chicago-made) Jensen P12Q.

The BDRI is a great amp if that is the tone you are after. As Arjay said, it won't sound like a Bassman, but it may have the sound you like. I suggest you try it out along with the DRRI and make a choice. If you go with the BDRI, I can give you some suggestions for tubes, speakers, and simple mods.

Uh, the OP said he has a 65 Bassman. The original Marshalls were based on the 59 Bassman. Totally different amp. You need to study your history a little more.

Thanks for the replies. I never expected to get the sound of my bassman in a BDRI. Just wanted to find a good Fender amp that had a good clear, jazz, bass tone to it. I play rythum on my Gretsch strung with some D'addario jazz lights and just love the smooth tone that comes out of the bassman amp. I have no need for disstortion, delay, or chours. Maybe just a little reverb, a good clear tone and less weight. Thanks again for your comments.

Probably a better choice given the OP's playing style.

(IMHO) BDRI tone is clear as mud. (/IMHO)

And I found the built in reverb to be very weak compared to the blackface amps.
When I was trying to play surf an external unit was needed to get anything decent.

Obviously, you don't know how to get the best tone out of a BDRI.

The simple removal of one resistor greatly improves the reverb on a BDRI.

Thanks for the imput. I'm going down to local music store next week to play a few amps. I'll probally play the BDRI just to check it out but base on advice, I will diffinitely be playing the DRRI.
