For new speakers, surprised 2 haven't been mentioned:

Kendrick Black Frame - yes it's $150, but it's also amazing. Great Fender speaker.

At 1/2 the price, I'm very happy with the Warehouse Speakers G12C - I recently put 2 in my 2x12 closed cabinet and will be selling my Weber California 12's in my Bandmaster combo for these. They are great - sweet midrange, enough bottom, and no icepick highs.

I've been putting off the C-Rex long enough, I've been tempted to try it so many times and never did.

I know how much i loved the webers, i used them in my 5E3 and my 59 Bassman ltd and they improved the snot out of both amps, 12A150 and alnico tens in the bassman.

My Clark Piedmont came with webers (bought it used) not sure if that was original or not, it did introduce me to Weber.

Or I'll sell the DRRI and the Egnater Tourmaster (when it returns) and get a nice victoria or clark (used once again).

Don't do any of the above until you've auditioned a Celestion Gold = DRRI sweetness & delight = best amp in the world.

I keep saying it, and probably always will now. :D

My cannabis rex is installed, it was a used speaker by the way and has a few hours on it.

Ultra low volume , dead 2.1 and still in the at home volume range and it springs to life, not muddy or wet blanket like at all.
In fact I would dare to say it is a HUGE improvement over the stock emi and even over the swamp thang.

Its after 10:00 Pm my time and the neighbors are only about 3/4 of an acre away so I'll let ya know tomorrow how she sounds up to stage levels (volume 3 to 3.5 with my route 66 up and running).

It is nice and warm, however not too dark at all, I really like it !!!

Yep thats the point, its what makes me happy !

Its my amp and I gotta love the tone or why play it ?

I know there are other speakers out there that sound even better, no doubt, however for what I was willing to pay, this sounds Great !

Cleans are full and warm, no spike, O/D sounds are Rich and smooth.

It is where my search ends for the DRRI in my stable

The fact that changing this speaker after all of the years the OE speaker was in there had so much impact (possitive) on the sound and character of the amp is kinda funny.

Since 1997 most likely several owners lived with the original sound, When I replaced the OE to send back the Swamp Thang and wait on the C-Rex I found that the tone wasn't bad at all, Compared to the Drastic addition of warmth and fullness of the C-Rex it was still a good swap.

Sometimes we just need a change, sometimes Guitar Players are just fickle ! HA !

Figured I play in the big leagues with you all, and swap my speaker too. I have a Swamp Thang that I never used on another project, so away I go.

I'm reminded of the line from Catch 22: "Boy that's some Catch, that Catch 22". Only mine goes, "Boy that's some Speaker that DRRI".

Blues Bondsman, help a fellow poster who is hard of thinking. First, the clip on the speaker doesn't just pull off, correct? Do I have to pry something up to get it loose (my SCXD had a pin that needed to be pushed with a toothpick, but I don't see that here)? And getting a wrench on those upper 2 screws is a trial in patience, and 1mm turns. And what the heck was Fender thinking with those razor ends on the 8 mounting screws (which are just long enough that a socket wrench cannot be used on the 6 exposed screws)? I almost needed stitches. Finally, the coup de grace, How do you lift out the speaker past the Transformer that blocks the upper left screw? I could not get the old speaker out. I would be deeply appreciative of a procedure and your techniques to do all this.

In the end, I did not succeed in replacing the Jensen. But one positive did seem to transpire. Tightening down the 8 screws (they were really loose to start with; and I made sure not to overtighten) seems to have given the old speaker some extra tonal breadth, especially on the lower registers. Course, that could be the beer talking.

I did it the hard way the first two times, this last time I removed the bottom back panel, took a long phillips #2 screw driver and removed the four simple speaker baffle screws and simply pushed it out the front.

Half the time or less and way less hassle !!!

The speaker connections on mine were typical spade connectors and a little wiggle and pull removed them very easily.

Before you begin to marvel at my intelligence, I found that advice right here !!!

Have fun !!!

Its been about a week, no turning back, i sold off the original and the C-Rex stays !

Minor EQ tweeks and it sounds Excellent.

Wish i had tried one sooner.

I'll go vack to my favorite 12A150 webers when i build my own low powered Twin, watching others here build amps is making me a believer.

Glad you're happy!

Would suggest a further tweak - grab a Mullard CV4024 for the Phase Inverter. $30 but I think you'll be glad you did. Huge tone improvement in Fenders.

I just bought a box of 5 12AT7 RCA's last weekend from my NOS source.

The 12AT7's in it are GT's so I thought why not go NOS USA made all the way !
