I'm truely lov'n my recent DRRI purchase, I've never loved the eminence Original speakers in the old ones and can't stand the import jensen wannabees.

What did you put in yours and exactly how happy are you ????
and WHY !

C-rex, swamp thang, 12F150, 12A150, Texas Heat, Red White & Blues, 15" JBL's
These seem to be the favorites for our beloved tube amps.

I'm looking for the bottom firmness of my Twin, the top end that won't cut my head off but have all that Fender chime, more bell, less glass.

Lets put this to rest and expose every candidate for its strengths and be honest about its weakness.

Anyone care to rehash this covered to death subject with some straight truth about our pet speakers ???, it will be the users guide to finding your sound with a DRRI.

Too serious ? go right ahead and poke some fun too.

My preferred type for most Fender amps is a JBL D-series loudspeaker -- most of my gear is so equipped. I'm also quite fond of UK-made Celestion V30's and vintage Jensens (ceramic and alnico) for the sonic variations they're noted for.

To clip C-10 or not to clip C-10 ?
That is the question !

and how will that effect the very question of replacement speaker.

Won't effect the woofy bass much at all, I can get to three on the volume before it goes woofy.

O.K. I did the toothpick and solderring iron trick and popped the legs through on the C-10
Bright cap (tiny little guy) and I have to tell ya not a lot of change.
Still very bright !
I am using some nice RCA 6V6's and v-1 and v-2 both have jan spec Phillips 5751's in them, so..... its gotta be the original eminence speaker causing all that shrill.

P.S. removing the cap took about 15 minutes, however I have been in and around amp chassis for a few years and have well insulated tools too.

If your Eminence speaker that came with the DRRI looks like this one, it's the speaker (in a bad way). I've had several DRRI with simmilar malady. Caps, resistors, tubes... nothing could take the irritating edge off the amp.

[Yeah that's a Ampeg ReverbRocket cab being used as a test bed]

Except the speaker. After trying several brands and models, I find the Weber 12A125A the best fit for this amp. Esp if you want to keep the original BF Bluesy tone.

I had to use the speaker without the magnet cover, so that it would not interfere with the amp.

30 watts, no doping. Pretty tight bass. Not like a comparable ceramic 12F125 or -150, but I like the Bluesier OD. Really does give the amp more of an original BF tone (IMHO).

I'm thinking of staying with a ceramic to keep it tighter overall.

so 12F150 or swamp thang, the C-Rex sounds very dark from what I have heard.
Sure wish there was a place to try a few different flavors.

Again I'm more of a chunk'n rythym guy with a few short single note leads and double stops, my favorite sound is a good multi string bend with lots of definded notes and just enough hair on the edge of the note.

I'm diggin some Tab Benoit lately, although my playing is a bit more complex than his, i like his rythyms

With a Weber 12F150, you will know the definition of LOUD with nice bass. Very efficient.
I doubt you'll cranking the puppy to "10" much. You'll prolly need to forgo the magnet cover. I've put 12F150A and -T into DRRI, light dope. 25 watts.

Side note: I've had to replace the 12AX7/7025 input tubes with a good, quiet 5751 type. A good modern made one is the Sovtek BP 5751. Or the Sylvania/Philips 1980's JAN 5751. Both are good, quiet tubes. You'll need them to drive that DRRI above "5" with those super efficient Weber ceramics. Cleanly with controllable feedback. IMO. YMMV. ROFALMBO (B = Brain, here)

Good luck! Post us your results.

Another reason I favor the JBL D120F -- even with its 11.5 lb alnico magnet structure, the shallow-throw frame only requires a depth of 4-5/8" when mounted.

Arjay, that reminded me of the first TRRI I buffed up (like 15 years ago now).Put in Sprague ATOM's into the PS, 7581A in place of 6L6GC (about 20 more total watts) AND JBL E120 speakers. Their magnet profile is even lower. Boy, was this baby LOUD and clean. WAY louder than my BFTR running Sylvania STR-415 tubes and D120F's.

What do you think of these speakers?

5751 have been in v-1 and v-2 since day one !

So the 12F150 is very efficient ? excellent !

I seldom need to exceed 3 on the volume level, with the boost from my route 66 comp I get tube OD at about 3.1 (not using the OD side of the pedal at all).

Thanks Guys !

The K120's are great speakers -- direct, upgraded descendents of the original Gerst-designed D-series. The only significant difference between the two drivers is the increased power-handling capability of the K's (it's doubled over that of the D's). I own two pair of them.
