So, what were the other amps you tried? You never bothered to say what you were comparing the TRRI against. Were you playing other amps of equal power? Same size and number of speakers? Were you playing a Frontman and a Mustang or were you playing other boutique amps? What type of music do you play? Blues? Country? Death Metal? Worship? All that goes into selecting an amp. And yeah, I think many people here will readily agree that there are a number of amps that are better than a TRRI in price, performance, power, and reliability. But since you never bothered providing any of your paramaters for choosing an amp, it is impossible to make a recommendation. You had already made up your mind about getting a TRRI so nothing anyone said made any difference. Several of us in so many words told you that while the TRRI will probably sound good at bedroom levels, it would not be the first choice for that use. But your mind was set. So go ahead. Buy your TRRI. Just don't come back here whining and asking questions about how you can control the volume of the thing in your bedroom.

I did not ask for a recommendation. I simply asked if you can play a TRRI not loud and if it is true that some new TRRI have issues with the tubes. I learned that there is actually problems with the tubes and that you can play a TRRI at home volume levels (even though it is considered a blunt overkill). I also got a good tip to borrow one and try it out at home before I buy it. Maybe I will also learn something about the advantages and disadvantages over distorting via volume vs pedal.

Is there ways to control the volume other then the volume control?

I guess I caught you at the wrong time in the month.

You're right. You didn't ask for recommendations. You're mind was made up. I apologize for being foolish enough to think that you would be willing to entertain recommendations for other amps.

Do a Google search on "guitar amp attenuators". You will probably need one.

None of my posts were personal insults directed at you. Why you found it necessary to throw this one at me is clearly indicitive of your level of maturity. I hope you enjoy your new amp.

When you buy an amp, you need to get one you like. There is no amp better than a Twin Reverb. It is the gold standard. If you use it at home, just turn it down, or turn the guitar down, add a nice pedal like the Fulltone Fulldrive II. It has got to be web dogma around here that you're better with a Deluxe Reverb. A lot of it is old guys don't want to or can't carry the 85 pound amp. But they all have one. Tubes aren't that expensive. Especially if you can afford a $1500 amp. I say buy it and enjoy. You can't do better, just different.

hey there~
imo, sounds like u need a DRRI.
I had a TRRI and i used to have a Pro Tube Twin~Amp (even heavier and even more tubes, watts, etc.)
i no longer have these amps.
I DO miss them - beautiful wall of sound on both and YEAH beautiful low volume too
I moved them out for a DRRI and a supersonic 22
my BACK likes this move
the TRRI is not TOO bad, but that Twin~Amp was really kinking out my back

BUY what you want tho - LIFE is in a blink of an eye, if you like the TRRI the best that is what you need right now - GET IT u will love it

I have the TRRI and the DRRI. They are great amps. I use both of them at home for practice.

As Arjay first said, you need to turn up the TRRI to 4 to 5 on the amp volume to get the tone going. I set the volume on my Strat at around 6, which provides a good balance between the tone and demoing my house.

The main reason that I added the TRRI to the existing DRRI is that we play certain outdoor venues by the ocean that need the horsepower.

Forgot to add, the TRRI came with a medium hissing sound (beyond the norm). It turned out to be the V5 tube (of course, the last one I checked).

Gear lust is fine. Just don't try to rationalize it - if you want it go ahead and get it.

My favorite guitarist at home with a practice amp at low :

Good enough for Dean Ween at home good enough for me!

A nice small solid state is all you NEED. It's a fact. You WANT an expensive tube amp. Go for it!

Re GTG, twirlybloggg, and Paul Surf: Thank you for your opinions and advice, especially the ones regarding volume levels. It is well appreciated and I hope you are right. And who knows, maybe someday I will need mine at a venue at the ocean (or at least a big lake) as well…

Re bluesky636: Just maybe you should consider if it not premature of you assuming that I do not listen to advice (or do you know how I made up my mind). I was just surprised what reactions my choice provoked. With regards to my comment about the “wrong time in the month”: I just wanted to tease you, sorry ;-( Thank you again for your tips however.

Re emcron: You are of course 100% right. But to my defense: I never thought anything else.

The thing about the Twin Reverb was that while testing the various amps, to me it standed out so clearly as the superior amp. I did not notice it so much in the first round, but in the second round it was obvious. I thought it would be more difficult and subtle to pick an amp that I really like.

I should have my amp on Dec 1st. I will report back if the volume works out ok at home and at our jam sessions.

PS: Paul Surf – I know the chances are quite slim, but did you by a chance play at the pier at Cocoa Beach on Sunday April 24th in a Bears Jersey? That was one of my best lunches this year.

floopy,

We play on the other coast in southern CA.

You may already know this, but the TRRI speakers will sound pretty good right out of the box, then the tone will start to deteriorate during the break in process. Once you have enough hours on them, they will start to sound good again and it's all upside from there.

Best of luck.

I've been playing 35 years and had many amps and guitars. I wish I still had my first amp, an old Gibson, and my second, an old Randall. Could not find what I wanted for years after getting rid of them. Now I have a Dime D100 and 4x12 and a Fender Bassman 70 and Marshall 4x10. They are the closest to the sound I had years ago and have been lookin for since. My advice is to go and play more amps of different brands and power ratings and make sure what you want before you buy. You have set the bar high with the twin and there is nothing wrong with that. But there is nothing worse than playing with a sound that's not what you want. Good luck in your search, keep jammin, and be cool. :D

By the way, all my equipment gets used everyday. My living room is 15"x15", and I love it. :D

I love the twin but, man....the weight and the fact that (as it was pointed out in an earlier thread) is way too loud for most clubs is the real killer. I thought real seriously about getting a Deluxe Reverb RI and probably would have if I had about 400 dollars more to spend in my pocket the day I bought a 40 Hot Rod Deluxe...a very nice amp in its own right. If you live in a place where you will need to lug a very heavy amp up a flight of stairs at 3 in the morning, I would recommend getting something along the lines of a Deluxe or a Hot Rod Deville or Deluxe. They are heavy too but the Twin is a real behemoth!

Hi everybody,

I promised a review of the Twin Reverb higher up in this thread, and after 14 months, of testing here it is:

I have been playing it mostly at home, but also used it together with friends for practice and jam sessions and smaller gigs about 3 times a month on average.

On the plus side is definitely the great clear, powerful sound when playing together with other people. Everybody loves the sound spontaneously and are fighting to use and test it. Sometimes in our best moments it really sounded better than any CD sound I have listened to. It sure rocks, and it’s not because we are very good musicians. Due to this I consider the purchase 100% worthwhile and I have no regrets.

My guitar colleagues have smaller amps which are definitely sounding nice played in isolation, but in direct comparison the TRRI sounds so much better by far. No competition.

I also think it sounds quite nice when just playing alone at home. But of course I understand better now that an amp like this is truly an overkill for just practicing at home at low volumes. I guess that's the reason why I still play mostly acoustic guitar at home still.

I bought a pedal for it, but found that I like it clean better in 95% of the cases.

On the negative side is definitely the weight. Even if I am strong and heavy myself, it is a true $@!&* to carry around. I can only hope that I will not get so lazy, so that I stop carrying it along to every music session. Even though today (unlike a year ago), I can see this happening in a distant future.

Bottom line I am quite happy. I love to play with it. I am glad I did not purchase a compromise :D
