I just purchased the following: Hot Rod Deluxe, Type PR246, Serial # B-263474. The front has the emblem "Fender-Deluxe", It has the vintage knobs and the vintage Celestian 30 speaker. Mde in Mexico. What was the Manf. suggested retail price when new? Is this more comparable to the Hot Rod Deluxe 112 Extension or the Hot Rod Deluxe III. My first post to this. Thanks

Hi dsutley,

Congrats on the new amp (HRDlx). It seems that the special editions were usually $100 more than the standard models, so retail maybe $799 new. We can't tell much by the serial number, maybe you could post a picture. Pictures are a must. :D

The "Hot Rod Deluxe 112 Extension", is a 1x12 extension speaker cabinet, while the "Hot Rod Deluxe III" is just the latest version of the HRDlx amp, being the third (III) iteration, which has a black control panel instead of chrome on the previous versions (there are exceptions on chrome panel). The HRDlx ext cab is made for, and works well with your amp.

Does it look like this one? There may have been other versions with the V30...?

Thanks for the reply. Take a look at the pics. I was wondering what the difference was between the regular Hdrlx and the Special Edition Hdrlx (like mine) and the Hdrlx III. I had read that the special edition version added the Celestion speaker that may be a little better, but other than that, I don't know. I guess all are built in Mexico now? I would like to know the year built also if anyone can help.

Thanks again for the help.

Nice amp. :D Did you just add the "(Emerald Green)" to the thread title?

The only differences between the regular and special editions are the speaker and the covering on the amp cabinet, the amp is the same in both. the V30 has a great reputation, but "better" is in the ear of the beholder. The version III is just the latest/newest version of the regular amp, and has some minor circuit revisions and a Celestion "G12P80" speaker, instead of the Eminence "Gold Label" speaker, and a black control panel, but essentially the same amp as previous versions. The "Special" or "Limited" editions are the same horse, different color and speaker, and have so far not been version III (black panel).

As for the year built, look for an inspection sticker inside the cab, like the one in the pic below, for a two-letter code as shown. The two letters denote year (first letter) and month (second letter) manufactured and can be deciphered here (first link below). Mine shows the letters "HJ", which indicate "1997, October". If no sticker, then contact Fender (second link below) with the serial number and they might be able to tell you.

Yes, I just added the (Emarald Green) in the thread line. I didn't know if that might be a particular model regarding specs and or when it was made. Still trying to figure out how old it is. It looks very new, but I guess it has to be older than when the Hrdlx III was started. Any ideas. I have tried all of the tables and suggested ways of dating and had no luck.

Oops! I just added the dating info to my previous post. If no sticker, contact Fender.

Ill hop on here for a follow up. I bought a second not working Deluxe Hot Rod, im not crazy, just replaced my scope so im not needling around. Second one was good purchase; $150, all it needed was 1 cap resoldered, worked perfectly.
The second one was about a year older than the first one that blew, but besides the cap (which apparently must have issues, all you have to do is google the position # and Deluxe Hot Rod and 100K posts on forums come up) it was in MUCH BETTER shape. It made me think of years spent hocking cars, and i think the lesson extends to pretty much anything you're buying used, second hand, however you want to lable it (pre-owned for cars); the product itself, where it lies in the pantheon of whatever manufacturer who made it, can be indicative as to what kind of maintainence its going to $$ require.

THe Hot Rods, and the earlier Blues deluxe/devilles, while not being 'entry' or beginner level gear usually, odds are was purchased by someone who's going to put it through it's paces harder than some of the more expensive models. Forget amps, look at guitar lines; I walk into the shop on Sat, and see 5 Martins that werent there the previous week, running from a newer "X' model, to 40 year old D-28, i dont have to even look up the ticket to see who ownes them anymore. They seem to (in general terms)fall in line with the clientel; from teenagers who started playing a few months ago, to the 65 year old who's played for decades. The kid is going to put that instrument through more abuse than the older player. Whether its youthful exuberance, to just plain neglecting to do the small things that keep it working properly, like regular setups, hydration, storage, etc.

If you go and look at 2- 5 year old Mustang GT's, one owned by a guy who bought it upon retirement;and the other given to a kid on his 17th birthday; i dont care that the first one has 20,000 more miles on it than the kids; odds are it was much better maintained, it didnt get the snot kicked out of it at every green light, and will give you less headaches.

The first amp, that i thought blew the OT, was a disaster. I ended up taking the chassis out and apart to get in there and clean it, wipe down the cabinet with stuff that'd kill anything it touches. The second; had a cold solder joint, a little dust from not being played, but other than that, was in great shape. I went in and retouched some historically problem areas; mostly just weak solder joints (and this is also one of the 1st things Fender put out that id rather have the Mexican built than the american). Id have no reservations throwing it inthe back seat and gigging with it.

You get what you pay for, and this is even more true if you didnt buy it new; the lower the original price tag the closer you should look (not that you shouldnt examine everything equally vigilant, but you know wht I mean; Id rather buy a guitar played by a member of Bread @ their height (was there one?>) than one of the Sex Pistols during theirs.
