I recently picked up a 65R cheap and had to replace one of the input jacks. I never tried the amp until after I repaired it. The promblem is it cuts out after about 5 minutes or so, then it comes back on. Sometimes I shut it off a couple times and eventually it comes back on. Has anyone had this problem or maybe steer me in the right direction. I like the amp a hellalot when it's working. I only paid $50.00 for it, is it a writeoff? Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

Hi bassintom,

Sounds like maybe a poor connection somewhere, possibly a bad solder joint. You should inspect the solder joints closely on the circuit board(s) using a magnifier, and touch up any that are questionable. Since you just changed the jack, I would start there.

Thank you for responding. I will check the solder joints first. I'll post back and let you know how I made out. Thanks again, Tom

shimmilou is correct. Solder joints are the big weak spot on these amps. That input jack is tops on the list. I always suggest that you loop your cable through the handle to avoid damaging the jack. The PC board is the real trouble here. It breaks away from the jack solder tabs and you loose continuity. I have found that the PC board run gets torn near the jack and, what i do is run a bridge over the torn run. That is, a piece of wire is placed between the two solder joints to by pass the torn run. $50 is a great price for that amp. It's a real nice amp and can be used for practice or gigging.

It's imperative to bear in mind that these amps -- most new ones, in fact -- are not built to the same rugged standards of durability and reliability as the Fenders of old. Respectful handling when loading, unloading, and transporting will enhance their opportunity for trouble-free service and abuse or misuse should be avoided at any cost -- simply put, they're not very forgiving of accidents or "operator error".
