New member here...just took delivery on my brand new SS22. Fired it up, sounds great...except for a "rattle" when sustaining notes. Sounds to me like a tube rattle, but I cannot decipher which tube is causing the issue. The "rattle" reminds me of what it would sound like to have the tube covers vibrate.

I removed all of the tube covers...the "rattle" is still there.

I ordered from GC, and I talked with them today. They are suggesting that I send the whole unit back and they will send me a replacement.

Does anyone here have any suggestions on what I might look for before I simply send it back?

Have any other SS22 owners experienced this problem?

Thanks in advance.
Erik

Its under warranty. If GC is willing to take it back and give you a new one, do it. If you can, be sure to play the new one in the store before you leave.

Forgot to mention...I ordered it through GC online...which means I have to ship it back and wait for them to ship me a new one.

Oh, well ....

Troubleshooting rattles can be frustrating and time consuming. A cabinet rattle could sound like tube rattle. A rattle in the room could sound like a cabinet rattle. A tube rattle could sound like a room rattle. And so on.

If you have a spare 12AX7, you could swap it one by one for one of the other 12AX7s and see if it goes away. It could also be one of the 6V6s. If after all that it still rattles, then you need to look at the cabinet or room. Good luck.

For what its worth... I have never heard a "rattle" from my SS22, just a "ringing" from the JJ6v6s tubes that replaced the stock 6v6 tubes. I used 3 Big O-rings per power tube to calm them down a little. The O-rings dont delete the ringing but they do "dull" it alot!

Hi bustrz5150,

If you can verify a tube rattle by substitution, and call and talk to the right people at "GC online", you could possibly get a replacement tube sent to you, avoiding a long wait for shipping both ways.

mine had the same. i bought mine inside store - and unwrapped it and played test there-
everything good except for one of the 6v6 was rattling bad. they just gave me another matched pair of groove tubes 6v6 - same tubes. fixed it~ iz happy now

i did have the V4 reverb recovery tube go out just the other day - reverb was weak AND it had bad rattle - if i thumped tube lightly with amp on ( or even the reverb knob) - the amp would ring like a bell. changed that v4 preamp tube and yes - happy again

you know how combo amps can be hell on tubes anyways - all that speaker vibration

i did rebias it, it was biased actually really hot. I lowered it to 24mV - sounds good, breaks up a lil different on the clean channel now, i like it.
TP40(D35) was at 32 and TP41(D36) at 31 !
My plate voltage, TP43(D38) is 413 VDC. of course, don't rebias it yourself unless you know about current that is running thru - it can mess you up pn a good day and kill you on a bad one

there is a tip with these amps too~ the clean channel stays clean up to around 3 or 4 on the volume knob for cleans, and of course you can get dirt with the clean channel from early breakup to classic rock, but for dirty channel, try gain 1 knob set MAX and the gain 2 knob on -0-. This gave me some better pick response/dynamics. i think this amp sounds better with my strat w/single coils than my custom 22 w/humbkrs
as far as a workingman's budget,
like a mullard in v1 and JJ's or Electro Harmonix for the 6v6's
but whatever~

That's interesting. I have a set of JJ 6V6's laying around...I'll put those in and see if that fixes my problems before I ship it back...I'd hate to send it back for something so simple.

Thanks for the suggestions. But, if you have more, let me know.
Thanks,
Erik

Whenever changing output tubes, especially when changing brands, you should check the bias. You risk red-plating and ruining the tubes (and then possibly the amp), or at least risk poor performance and bad sound if the bias isn't correct. You want at least 20 mV, and no more than 24 mV at either test point (TP40 or TP41).

If substituting preamp tubes, no bias adjust is necessary.

Thanks for the information...I've never owned a tube amp that would require a rebias after a tube change...all of my other amps have been self-biasing (Peavey Classic series)...

For what's it worth, I did swap the 6V6's, and the rattle is gone...while I do know that the 6V6's that I put in are a matched set, I do not know what they are rated, whereas the GT 6V6's that I took out were their "4 white" labels...which I believe is the middle of the road tube.

That said, I plan to call Fender tomorrow and use my 90 day tube warranty...if i were to request the exact same spec tube (GT 4 white), would I still need to have my amp biased?

I don't currently own the equipment to do it myself and I really don't want to take it anywhere at this point...remember, it's new...and I'm trying to keep it...

Thanks,
Erik

Ya see all those little bits of wire and metal inside the glass tube? Those are called "elements". A tube that is installed in a combo amp like the OP's is constantly beaten by audio waves at high levels. That causes the tube to shake and the elements inside the tube to shake. When they shake it is called "rattle". The noise is also sometimes describes as the "sound of breaking glass". The technical term is "microphonic". If you have never heard a microphonic tube, consider yourself lucky.

I currently have so called microphonic tubes in my amplifier. I hear a ringing not a rattle... when I think of a rattle noise I think of a rattle snakes rattler or maybe a baby rattle. The sound I hear is not a rattle. If "rattle" is a technical term adopted by the tube amp community to describe the ringing of a microphonic tube I guess I need to know that? Haha!
